(video) 14-year-old Tucumcari girl recovering

14-year-old Tucumcari girl recovering – Authorities say a 14-year-old Tucumcari girl girl is recovering at an Albuquerque hospital after being shot in the head with a Taser dart by the Tucumcari police chief.

Stacy Akin and her 14-year-old daughter were arguing over a cell phone Thursday and while  out front of police headquarters, the 14-year-old girl ran off

2. People are so quick to blame the Police Department and it’s Officers for everything they do. They are not above the law and should NOT be able to get away with trying to be as such. But people, especially today’s youths think they can get away with anything and try cry when they pay for their stupidity. She had NO business running away and deserves what she got. If it were my child, I’d feel the exact same way as my comment states.

3. This was not right!!!!!The officer was not in any danger and should not have used any weapon!!!!!!! He was lazy and did not want to persue her and used what he could, he got close enough to use the taser right@!!!!!Police do think they are above the law and that gives everyone the wrong idea on wha the law is!!!!!!!!

Comment by Jr — July 21, 2009 @ 8:25 am

4. She should not have run. When told to stop, you do. Just like the Grandma in Texas. Don’t dare a cop to do something you REALLY don’t want to happen.

Comment by celeste — July 21, 2009 @ 8:33 am

5. Even if the officer did not want to persue her, he should not have hit her in the head, in the leg maybe, but not the head. Officers are not above the law, NOBODY IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by martha — July 21, 2009 @ 8:36 am

6. This is outrageous!!! This young girl was arguing with her mother. ALL of us have done that at one time or another. She had not committed any crime. I would be curious to see this officer who could not catch a 14 year old. Was he physically fit or was tasering a child the easy way to handle the situation?

No one on this forum knows why the girl ran from him. She is a child and was obviously upset. She ran to a park first. The officer chasing her with a car escalated the situation. He could have kept his distance and monitored her safety for a little while until she had a chance to calm down. Instead he tried to be a bully.

There should be stricter guidelines for using tasers in non-emergency situation. And yes, I have friends that are deputies so I am not biased against law enforcement. Unfortunately too many times the badge and the authority go to their heads. Common sense is not common.

This was definitely excessive force on a child.

7. Maybe she learned something alot of folks in society seem to have forgot. cause and effect or there are consequences for any and all our actions. To much in our society there are people unwilling to take responsibility for their actions and what put them in a situation in which bad can happen.

Comment by Rich — July 21, 2009 @ 8:45 am

8. Child or not this young lady was out of control. Should the officer have just let her go and end up who knows where and doing who knows what? Im sure he did not mean to hit her in the head. Keep in mind it is against the law to run from a Law Enforcement Officer!!!

Comment by Al — July 21, 2009 @ 8:47 am

9. what is she going to learn? that by getting upset, and running off to the park is going to get you tased?

she should take responsiblity for getting shot by a taser? for running to the park?

Rich your comment makes no sense. If you want to put it like that, then child abuse should be fair game to this world.

A 5 y/o throws a sissy fit, seems fit to Rich that Cause and effect would be that the 5 y/o threw a sissy fit, so Rich should beat the child till it needs to be go to the hospital.

10. the officer probably tasered her as he was upset from having to run after her…so, he used what he had available…his taser gun. which does not make it right…she is a child, and a sick one to boot! he could have killed her!!! yes…she shouldn’t have ran away…but, she was upset…and being a child, doesn’t think like an adult…hell! some adults don’t even think like adults!!! nevertheless, what happened is horrible! there should be guidelines for using a taser…he could have shot at her legs…shooting at her head, indicates to me that he meant to do bodily harm…

11. One dumb lazy mistake will cost the tax payers of Albuquerque $$$$$$, what ever “happen to cut them off at the pass” and please do not blame the police depeartment, it was the act of one law enforcement person (chief wow) I have kin folk in all types of law enforcement so I might see thing this way instead of that way, but Roger Hatcher please get some HELP before you really screw up.

12. This goes to show that parents do not have control of their kids. Their was no way that me or my siblings would have run from my parents as we knew the consequences. Now adays the kids run the parents. What a shame as the kids are going to be kids and need guidance from responsible parents. Kudos for the police department tasering this person as she has to learn right from wrong. When a police officer says halt; they mean halt. She will think twice before running away from an officer when he/she says halt the next time. In return, parents will attempt to sue someone else when something like this happens. Yet the real problem a judge should look at is blaming the parents for not enforcing rules to follow especially an officer of a police/sheriif’s department. NOTE: The article doesn’t state the officer shot her in the head intentionally. Did dhe try to dodge the taser and get hit in the head accidently? Stop placing blame on someone until the entire facts are released about a story.

17. Although I know most of you in here think the police chief did the right thing, he’s the chief. He should have known better. The girl, on the other hand…She probably just needed some time to herself like every teenage girl does once in a while. Now, as for why he used the tazer instead of just chasing her down…That’s what the problem is with desk jockeys – they spend too much time at their desks playing Solitaire that they don’t get the exercise they need to stay in shape.

Comment by Mark — July 21, 2009 @ 9:08 am

18. The other RIch stated cause and effect. I agree 100%. People need to know that their is a cause for every situation and effect on how it will be handled. I’ll tell you something here; my parents repeatly stated when I grew up that “HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A PERSON WEARING A CAST ON THEIR REAR-END?” Jai needs to take a course in child development. If a 5year old is throwing a hissy fit; then the child needs to be corrected; otherwise the child will continue to conduct the same behavior. The other Rich did not say beat a child til they go to the hospital. I’ll bet that if you have kids Jai; that they will be problem children in their teens and early adulthood if you conduct the raising of your kids in the manner you speak.
I have friends that had your thinking; and you know that those kids were the ones in major trouble through their teens and early adulthood. Don’t blame others for your own mistakes……..is all that I am saying. Man up or Woman up and take responsibility for a person’s own kids.

Comment by Rich in Plainfield, IL — July 21, 2009 @ 9:09 am

19. This situation is very unfortunate. I have a child who has epilepsy so I understand the added complications. However, I don’t think the officer did anything out of his jurisdiction. The mother had no control over her child and took her to the police for help. The child continued to be out of control. It’s a loose, loose situation. The child was out of control, the parent had no control, the parent gave control to an officer. Perhaps the mother should have taken her to a psychologist instead. Now this girl is getting another mixed up message. Bottom line is, don’t send inappropriate pictures of yourself out.

As far as the taser in the head. First of all she was a moving target. Second, if you aim for the body and she goes down, it’s going to hit the head.

I wish everyone good luck here. Seems like a situation that just kept escalating.

Comment by Michelle — July 21, 2009 @ 9:09 am

20. I see quite often these cops are not in any physical shape. Surely not fit enough to catch a 14 year old girl while she is running away from them. Tazing her was by far the easiest way for the officer to handle the situation. This officer obviously made a poor judgment call that day.

Comment by Bob Bison — July 21, 2009 @ 9:19 am

21. You all must be american!!!

Holy s$%T!!! She was tasered in the HEAD! A little history should have been learned and understood prior to using any force!

A simple conversation with the mom prior to pursuing the child would have prevented this whole mess from happening. Sure she shouldn’t have been using the cell for porn, however if we tasered everyone who spoke dirty over the phone or sent the odd picture, we would all be tasered in the head.

MOM! how did you not stop the cop from pursuing? Havent you watched “COPS” on tv? They don’t talk to the victim, they just beat them up with anything they have in there hand!! including tasers. You know that is the new way of dealing with criminals!

If she wants to run across the street away from the cop without looking that is her problem. Who is the cop to stop her or for that matter chase her further into the street. And to be honest if someone threatened to taser me I would likely run too because to many people die from being tasered and I dont trust cops. They all have an air of conciet.

To sum up; She should be able to shoot the cop in the head with a taser and after he gets his head stapled shut, he can be fired because he can’t catch a 14yr old girl on foot!!

Signed Thewayitshouldbedone.

22. I blame the parent…..why would you take your child to the police station. If the parent can’t make their child mind maybe they shouldn’t have children. The policeman is not to blame here.

Comment by Terri — July 21, 2009 @ 9:25 am

23. The police officer was stupid and very irresponsible, is just a 14 years old girl. What can she do that risk the police life or other person, and whatever the police department today is a trash, to many incident for trust in them. Thats I think!

Comment by Anonimous — July 21, 2009 @ 9:28 am

24. I feel bad for the girl and the police officer…but feel that the parent should take responsibility too. In my opinion, she is the one that let the situation get out of control. Parents need to take responsibility for their own children, not leave it up to the community-police, teachers, pastors…now this parent is saying that this officer went too far. Well, maybe if this child was given a little less “freedom” with the cell phone and who knows what else, then this whole situation could have been avoided. I put no blame on this officer, I’m sure he was not aiming for this child’s head.

Comment by Lu — July 21, 2009 @ 9:29 am

25. The parents couldn’t handle their daughter so they went to the police for help. Moving target is right. An unfortunate accident as far as hitting the girl in the head, but I am tired of the media showing one side of every police incident gone wrong. Here’s a thought – maybe the police should go on strike for a couple weeks….what do you think would happen then? The parents cannot handle their daughter how are they going to fair with no police station to go to or police on the streets?

Comment by Jen — July 21, 2009 @ 9:32 am

26. It’s about time the cops did something right. I bet she will think twice before running from the cops again. She should be forced to act in a porno flick.

27. New Rule: If you cannot subdue an elderly woman, five year old child, or a teenage girl then you shouldn’t be a Police Officer. What’s the matter did she call you a wus.

Comment by James — July 21, 2009 @ 9:38 am

29. It is not against the law to run from the police. The belief that it is agains thte law to run from the police is the type of attitude the police want everyone to have. It is only against the law to run from the police when the person knows there arrest is imminent. What crime had the young lady committed o put her on notice that her arrest was imminent? There are still decent police officers out there, but more and more police agencies are teaching their officers to act like storm troopers. The authorized use of force by police officers has been escalating in the recent past all in the name of officer safety. Whatever happened to citizen safety?

Comment by David — July 21, 2009 @ 9:39 am

30. You are all retarded!! read what you are saying! The cop was right??? get your head out of your ass!! She wasn’t threatening the cop and now this is just giving more reason for cops to taser when they feel like not running. If the person has a gun or weapon, or even if being dared is more reason than just because…. !..

Comment by Canadian — July 21, 2009 @ 9:41 am

31. I think she got exactly what she deserved!! I hate it happened to a young girl, but the fact of the matter is she didn’t stop when the officer asked her to!! We live in a sick world, how is the officer to know what her intensions where! The mother could have been dropping her off at the station because she just killer her brother, who knows!! If you watch the video, she was sending dirty pictures to older men via text! Thats why her own mother was taking her to the police station!! I thinks it’s hilarious how after all that her parents are like our poor girl… didnt the daughter just beat the mom up, the week before?? Just some more people trying to get a free ride! I say the taser is doing a great job! She could have been shot with a gun, or worse abused and rapped by one of these men she had been texting!! I think this is a wake up call for one person, might need to happen to a few more!!

35. Our youth has gotten out of control, but wow, I would be furious if my child had this kind of injury from a police officer. She may have been running, but had committed no crime AND even if she was a moving target, I would like to think police officers should have better aim than that.

Comment by Lisa — July 21, 2009 @ 10:02 am

36. STOP MEANS STOP. Parents stop making excuses for your children. This 14 years was physically abusive to her mother. She is out of control. If the parents had raised her correctly from infancy, they would not have this problem. You can’t wait until a child is half grown and then want respect. That’s why parents are to RAISE THEIR CHILDREN. This young lady does not listen to hear parents or anyone else of authority. I don’t feel sorry for her one bit, you reap what you sow and you get what you deserve. This could have been avoided if she had listened to the officer. Her head will heal.

Comment by fay — July 21, 2009 @ 10:02 am

37. Everybody is so quick to judge the actions an officer makes while do his/her job. We all want to second guess what was done when we have no idea what actually transpired. Also, the claims that she was just a 14 year old are ridiculous. Check your juvenile facilities and jails in your area and see how many 14 year olds are in custody for violent crimes like robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery, and Murder. Wake up people, we live in a violent country and today’s youth are some of the most violent offenders.

Comment by lp — July 21, 2009 @ 10:04 am

38. AFTER WATCHING THE VID. According to the video, she is walking on the side walk not doing anything unlawful.

From 00:00 to 00:07 its the officer driving up. At 00:07 the car stops. Assuming he gets out of the car at 00:08 and says “stop” at 00:09. At 00:14 the girl is running and the officer is pursuing her. At 00:17 the officer has the taser pointed at her from behind and ready to shoot.

According to the video, the officer took about 7 seconds of his time to try and pursue/convince this 14 year old child.

Now we dont know what the officer said, he could have said something disrespectful. He obviously was not trying to handle the situation in a professional manner. If it takes 7 seconds to pull out a taser, then there is really something wrong here.

39. Anyone with an Arrythmia of the Heart is at risk of being Murdered by these rogue cops who shoot first! A Taser is a weapon! It is a deadly weapon that should be banned! Police spokespeople say they are safe, but when was the last time a POlice P.R. person had a medical degree in Cardiology? NEVER!

Comment by Don — July 21, 2009 @ 10:07 am

40. forgot to mention, there is not any traffic, at the start of the video, the officer makes a right hand turn into the street she is walking up on. It shows that the road is completely clear.

There is also a park next to this road, which would make the speed limit about 15 mph to 25 mph.

41. The Police Chief is just a ugly fat bastard who in his Nazi mindset decided to taze a young girl. Wow I guess she presented a problem that his fat donut eating ass couldn’t handle. So to see someone in pain was his thrill and hiding behind the police badge he tazed her. What a coward, he can thank his lucky stars it wasn’t my daighter, because I would give him a taste of his own medicine. I can’t say enough time how sorry this po-lice che(i)f is. bubba

Comment by jmg — July 21, 2009 @ 10:15 am

42. I see it’s mostly males who are thinking the cop was in the right. Evidently you don’t have any children. The Chief was in the wrong for so many reasons. First, she was a monir and probably scared to death. Second, the Chief is supposed to be above stupidity. You don’t taze a child. Third, she wasn’t under arrest.
To all of you who think all policemen are fine upstanding people, go check out how many are being investigated in the small town of Deming, N.M. for illegal activities and spousal abuse. YES, being a cop goes to some of the cops heads. “The God Complex”.
I am 61 and have many friends who are or were policemen and I respect them so much. But there are always a few bad apples. And a whole lot of fat lazy ones who don’t want to chase anyone.

43. Is everyone really that stupid? An out of control teenager now and a pregnant drug user in a year or so. If the parent felt her childs behavior needed to taken up with the police then cudos to her. The children of today’s sociaty refuse all responsability for their actions and they need to be put in their place while they are still young enough the learn what could happen if they don’t. People get a grip!!!!

Comment by Sharon — July 21, 2009 @ 10:20 am

44. I think ther is a more important issue here!! We (citizens and Police) have been duped into believing that Tasers are ‘acceptable’ non-lethal force weapons to used at the discretion of the officer. Ask yourself this… had this officer not had a Taser what do you think he would have done? Would he have used his sidearm?? NO!! Would he have pursued her until he caught her…? maybe… would she have been injured by the officer? doubtful… Would there have been the high probability of a lawsuit? NO!! Like it or not, it is scenarios like this that are further eroding the respect for authority and the expectation of those in athority to act responsibly!!! The missuse of Tasers adversely affects our societal norms more than anything else we have created for Law Enforcement…. We created Police to Protect and Serve… so why have we given them a device to make it so easy to undernine and destroy that!!!

Comment by Dave from LV — July 21, 2009 @ 10:21 am

45. YamaMISSILE you are an idiot, lets see how you would feel if you were almost killed over and argument with your mother over a cell phone, the police officer had no right to taze her, and he almost killed her and you applaude such an act. You must be some sadistic bastard. She is 14 and certainly had not commited a crime and she most certainly did not deserve to be shot in the head, what ever happened to disabling a person by shooting for the legs, but in any case she didnt deserve either treatment, if you ask me, if her mother has not filed a complaint, child welfare should be knocking on her door.

46. Let Me answer some questions first off the police was wrong for tasering that girl some of you dumb s.o.b’s think he was right and of course thats until it happens to someone in your f**ked up family and Lu if cops were to go on strike that means police officers would probably lose their job they are already tired out the public arm themselves with fire arms each and everyday don’t you think thats why burgalurs are coming up dead who need a police officer now nobody but you chicken sh*t and if anybody else got a dumb comment to make please make it so I can go at you police are just trying to make themselves seem Higher just because of a piece of medal but that piece of medal don’t save you from karma it doesn’t save your family from death or even themselves all it means is that they are trusted more by higher officials

Comment by Omega — July 21, 2009 @ 10:25 am

47. I TOTALLY AGREE THAT IT WAS WORST THAN A CHILD ABUSE. HE COULD KILL HER. I BET HE DOESN’T HAVE PERFECT CHILDREN. IF HE HAS CHILDREN I DON’T THINK THEY RESPECT HIM BUT THEY ARE VERY SCARED OF HIM AND THAT IS BAD. I TRULY WISH THAT THEY KICK HIM OUT OF HIS JOB AND NEVER BE ABLE TO WORK AS A POLICE CAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO PROTECT US ,NOT TO HURT US. HE WAS JUST A FRICKING FAT LAZY BUTT THAT DIDN’T WANT TO RUN TO GET HER. WE’LL NEVER KNOW HOW MANY TIMES HE PROBABLY HAVE DONE THAT BEFORE. TO THE GIRL I PRAY FOR U TO GET BETTER AND PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR PARENTAS CAUSE ALL THEY DO IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD AND CAUSE THEY LOVE YOU MORE THAN ANY BODY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.

Comment by SWEETMAMA — July 21, 2009 @ 10:26 am

48. Bottom line is she is a 14 year old child, not a felon or even a misdemeanor crime convict, just an unruly CHILD, so who can honestly say that she deserves to be shot with a weapon that has caused 17 deaths in Florida alone since 2000…Is that what our society has become? So now it is ok to take a chance on killing our children when they argue back with us or act immature as they do, I mean since hey they are immature children, so why would we expect them to act like adults all responsible, proper and such. Then guess what we can then pass a new law and make them adults at 15 or something so were no longer responsible….Wake up people these are our own children that we are talking about…You do not turn lethal devices on children, not any child, no matter what they do. I mean unless you are of the same mind frame as Ted Bundy or the Son of Sam or for you younger people Jeffery Dahlmer…This cop needs to be tied to a pole in the town park and the parents of this child should be let to unload about one hundred tasers on his butt, now on a more real note, he for sure needs to lose his job as a law enforcement officer he is no good and unfit for the job for the simple fact that he is dangerous with a capital D and what child is next and will it be a death sentence the next time will he shoot a kid in the park for riding a skate board where there is no skate board riding allowed and will it be with a taser next time or a 40 caliber automatic…Think about it! The next time it could be a different kid, maybe even yours! Food for thought…Sincerely Yours, Mr. Timothy Jones

Comment by Timothy Jones — July 21, 2009 @ 10:26 am

49. I think the police officer should have wasted 3 hours of his day to try and rationalize with the 14 year old girl. They should have sat in the park, had some soda and discussed her problems. Yeah…right.

Everyone is saying she shouldn’t have been tasered, but we all know you would still be crying “child abuse” if he had caught up to her and laid his hands on her.

Punk stuck up biotch got what she deserved.

What right did the officer have to use such force? NONE!!!!!!! If you really believe a cop has the right to use such tactics, god help you when you run into a out of hand cop, you probably might like the abuse and unneccesary force he uses on you. Saying that she would be a pregnant drug user, YOU ARE WHATS WRONG WITH OUR SOCIETY!!!!!!!!

She’s atypical of society nowadays, no respect for her family, less for her community and none for herself. The headshot was a tragic accident, but I don’t know many 50+ people that can chase down a 14 year old who was determined to run. I imagine you don’t know how to shoot a weapon, but a tazer is not a bullet, and there are many things that can cause the dart to misdirect. he was trying to stop her before she did something much worse, perhaps run into oncoming traffic (as an example).

55. chris —— I HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE A CHILD, YOU WOULD MOST LIKELY ABUSE THEM. Children deserve patience and respect, the reason children act the way they do is because society wants them to be children but then treats them like adults. Its people like you who need to get their mind together, SHE IS 14 NOT 24. WHATS NEXT PUT THEM IN PRISON WITH HARDENED KILLERS JUST BECAUSE THEY HAD AN ARGUMENT WITH THEIR PARENTS.

CHRIS -Actually my children do not act this way, and they are very respectful to me and to others, but thats just the point, we have no proof this child is disrespectful, this might have just been a heated moment and the child RAN OFF, she didnt shoot anyone nor did she strike someone, so you think if a child runs off she should be almost killed by a reckless cop. And what about her mother maybe she is the one they should be taking a look at, maybe she has issues not the child…..it is possible, you know

Here is a list of MINOR MURDERERS I wish, as you put it a stupid chief would have been around.
Nate Brazill – 13
Barry Loukaitis -14
Evan Ramsey -16
Luke Wood ham – 16
Michael Carnel – 14
Colt Todd – 14
Mitchell Johnson – 13
Andrew Golden – 11
Andrew Wurst -14
Kip Kinkel – 14
Thomas Soloman – 15
Victor Cordova – 12
Seth Trickey -13
and the list goes on and on and on, simply because we as a society think children should be allow to misbehave. Each one of these CHILDREN, MINORS, killed another individual. I don’t know about you, but I want a million police standing around with tasers and ready to use them, child or no child.

59. The cop should not have used his taser gun, nor should he have got involved right away. This was between the girl and her mum. Cops in the U.S. are lazy that’s why we hear of so many gun and taser related events involving cops, when they could have used alternative methods. i.e. Maybe talk to the people more, or hey use ones legs and run a little. Cops spend way too long in a police car; hence, the laziness. The only time they get out is for a ridiculous traffic violation – they could be catching some real criminals, criminals they know about but are either too lazy or scared, or they are on the take.

62. Well if you are going to complain that someone was tased…..i guess he should have just shot her. Whoa! wait that is too drastic in this situation, lets give the cops some sort of other not lethal way of handleing a situation. Look! we have tasers for these situations….yeah If you think being tased is too drastic then move to Canada. There are people in the world being beaten to a pulp for acting wrong in an airport. There are people being held captive for wandering too close to a border. If you dont like how it is either do something to change it or LEAVE! Oh and by the way I’m willing to bet the head line” Girl gets tased, needs stitches and wig” is going to be better than “Handcuffed girl gets plowed by a semi fleeing from police” “Or Manhunt is in effect for a young girl that Police “watched from afar”, who now is lost. Then again I’m sure McDonalds was at fall for serving to hot of coffee……

Cops need to be taught how to deal with the public and most of them need to leave their arrogance at home. I see way too many of these younger cops who are on a power trip. It has become very dangerous.

I believe the girl should have not been tazed, what in the right mind would you do that to the little girl, she probably ran because she felt no one wanted to listen to her or was frustrated. The mother was also wrong for taking her daughter to the police station over a stupid argument, yes we all argue over something ridiculous but you handle it among yourselves.

I would laugh if someone would ever listen to the person that is telling you to stop running from your escape… like that would ever happen. World wide police officer have nothing better to do but to harass little kids, try to be hero and when you truly need help they can careless.

70. My faith in the police is restored. This girl is clearly spoiled to the point where she ignored her mothers request not to send inappropriate pictures to adult males and also disregarded a clear command by the police to halt. When she ran, the officer had a choice, either let an escaped suspect evade capture or light her up with a taser. Clearly he did not intend to tag her in the head but if you run from the police, you must expect some consequences.

Well done chief of police. His only crime was that he could not out run a girl. He should be applauded for the taser but mandated to lose 30 lbs and made to start jogging every day.

Comment by shawn — July 21, 2009 @ 10:54 am

71. I am so sick of people criticizing police officers for using these things. This girl abused her mother, was out of control, and blatantly disregarded the officers order to stop running. This is what is wrong with our whole society. We can not discipline our children without getting them taken away from us and when one gets disciplined it causes controversy. This is why we have students taking guns to schools and killing fellow students, kids rolling with their gang bang buddies causing trouble, and kids constantly being arrested. Children have no sense of respect for adults or authority and have nothing better to do than cause trouble. Get off the backs of adults that discipline kids. Its the only way things will change with the way they act. I promise you one thing though, this girl will never run away from an officer again while the officer is giving her an order.

Comment by Heath Comer — July 21, 2009 @ 10:57 am

72. It is unfortunate that she was hit in the head by the probe, but had you rather he shoot the girl with a firearm? When people run from the police, bad things happen, usually to them. You are quick to judge the officer who was doing his job and defend the “scared” and “helpless” teenager. 14 today is not the same as 14 30 or 40 years ago. We have 10 year old serving life sentences for murder. Just because someone is young doesn’t make them immune from the reprocussions of their actions. Did she deserve a Taser probe in the head, no. Was the officer wrong in discrarging the weapon, again no. There are so many factors we do not know about this situation, and a quick to judge based solely on our point of view. Was there a mental health issue? Was this a juvenile who was out of control beyond the capabilities of the parent? Was it the parent’s inability to be a “proper” parent? Were there environmental factors in the juvenile’s behavior? We are not talking about a rookie cop with an inflated ego. We talking about someone that has the position as a Chief of Police, be it a small town or metro area, still a community leader. I don’t think he would use the weapon outside of his legal authority. To the Chief, thank you for you service. To the young girl, welcome to a hard line introduction of life. I pray for a speedy and full recovery, and hopefully a lesson learned without the loss of a life.

74. I am very sad to hear of this incident. It should have and could have been prevented with better training by the police dept. and more careful monitoring of the child’s activities by her parent(s). In no way did this girl deserve to be tasered, nor the recipient of such brutal force. Clearly, this incident needs to be investigated, and the chief held accountable. I would hope that this case would also cause immediate changes in dept. policy as well, given the outcome. As a single parent of a 15 year old girl, and a professional school psychologist in the CA public school system, I have to say that parenting is difficult. I have never spanked my child, nor do I feel that hitting or violence works as a way to discipline children. We need to support our police in going after real criminals (serial killers, etc), NOT children, and in learning more about child and brain development. We also need to support our children when they make mistakes
(ie sending nude photos to anyone!), so they can grow up and learn better, more effective ways of problem solving.

76. Who ever sides with the cops simply because they are in a clownsuit complete with car and flashing lights and lethal arsenal and a targeted IQ range, I would be running for my life, Hey people Wake up smell the cyanide… I was raped by police and repeatedly hit in the back of the head because I wouldn’t bend over or be knocked out. No marks were left but the effects of brain damage would last.
Do not be fooled by Police thinking we need their kind of protection. Our police have become out of control and it started a long time a ago and they are now just going with it. Schools and police training schools don’t teach to understand how an answer is derived but teach by what answer to give a certain type of question. WATCHOUT I fear so called FREEDOMS RING is OVER. OH Taser is a less lethal option not an alternative for anything. Taser was meant for an alternative to firing a fire arm NOT a shoot and forget or ask questions later. It only requires unconsciousness to kill. Or with multiple shocks will kill within 10 tries. The human body’s blood loses keytones when blood goes to your heart it expects fuel not used fuel. Try running a car on burn’t gas. Better get on an IV or your dead. Same thing can happen being malnurished or stroke or heartattack etc.etc.
Not to mention ‘Police Officer’s’ tempers run wild because they get off on their job it is an excite instinct life or death ‘game’ although it is not a game, it is like one for a cop because that is how they are trained. The reason for the targeted Iq range is so they can be manipulated properly. When cops that are too smart happen they can become murderers and get away with it. Not to mention hosts of other corruptable characteristics. So they want cops smart but not too smart. I have never met a smart cop and pray I never do. A smart cop would be a demon of outrageous proportion. Just imagine cops believe they have the right to kill when they are pissed off. Just think how many times cops approach someone when they are pissed. They are always pissed even if they try not to show it.
I believe military police would be alot better than road going chaotic police action.
Please, call a martial law on police and us and get it out get the dirt out and progress to the next level stop holding everyone back with your stupidity.COPS.Just think how many cops want to rape me again and kill me just for writing this. Not to mention criminals. I can wear a judges garb but does that solely make me a judge. I can look like a clown but does that mean I aM? We need to take things for actuality not ‘well we meant for the cop to be a good guy’
its getting old people we need to stand up and bring control back to the people.
Or we are going to end up facing death just for following our dreams.

77. Lets go back to better police training. It is very easy to judge the event after the fact…what else was he supposed to do. Even if he did catch her….what then tell her to stop and wait for her to run again? If she wasnt going to listen to a police officer what makes you think when he caught her she was going to listen. Then he has to restrain her, amidst the struggle she gets bruises, bumps and banged up. Now we have a child abuser cop and you would have been telling him to just taze her cus then he wouldnt have had to manually restrain her.
If any of you have ever served in some sort of life and death postion such as protecting our cities or defending our country then my quote will mean something.

“I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6.”

80. I keep reading that this is a “Child” but when I read the article it said it was a 14 year old girl. I understand that she is underage but wake up people. Kids these days at the age of 14 can be worse than a 17 year old, furthermore she is 14 years old and she knows right from wrong and if an officer tells her to stop she knows she should do so. This girl did not want to listen and the officer responded the exact way in which he was trained. Kids today do not have enough discipline. I am only 26 but I can see the difference as if it were night and day. Today all parents are afraid that they will be arrested for child abuse if they spank thier child. I find this method of thinking completely insane. This gives our children the idea that no matter what they do they will pretty much get away with it, and if they are going to get punished just yell out abuse and someone will come to the rescue. I am not condoning abuse by any means but this girl disobeyed an officer which is a crime. If it had been a 24 year old woman this would not be making such a big stink. Tasers are not the most accurate things in the world either so I highly doubt shooting her in the head was intentional. I personally think that people need to stop looking for a lawsuit, stop blaming the officer for what happened and start looking at the root cause of the incedent, The 14 year old girl who did not obey an officer of the law. For those of you who say the officer just didnt want to chase after her, if you read the article and watched the video she ran across the street without even looking to see if it was safe. She could have very well hurt herself and others far worse than she is now. She could have been hit by a car, or cause an accident from cars trying to miss her, a number of things could have happened. If the Taser had not hit her in the head she would be just fine, but like I said they are not completely accurate. Think of me what you want but I get the belt when I acted up and it deterred me from doing the same thing again. And as for you that may say that I will be a child abuser or start saying “what should we do put them in prison?”, I am a parent and a very good one. Kids do require patience and respect. But some children need discipline. I live in a good neighborhood but I see kids that come and visit freinds that live around me and they are lawless. They have no fear because they know if they get into trouble they will get a slap on the wrist or have to go to Juvi, and it doesnt scare them a bit. It is really unfortunate that the girl what hit in the head by the Taser and I feel for her, but stop putting ALL of the blame everywhere else. -My 2 cents-

If the parnets today would not spoil the kids so bad and fail to control their childrens behavior from early on, then there would not be incidents as this. I think the police did what they thought was necessary and would have avoided the situation if possible. Why should they have to get in the middle of a parent and their child over a stupid cell phone issue. People today either need to handle it themselves or just not have children. You hear of people complaining that Gov. and law enforcement try to control to much, but as soon as they can’t do for themselves who do they run to.

86. I know what freakin happened here people….It was a matter of ‘who has the power the cops and your parents’ OR YOU. You see the generation of baby boomers took over the world. Now they crave your submission in every way possible. By bringing you up yelling and screaming. No sensible knowledgable credit was passed to you because the 60’s and 70’s rebelled they did not listen to their parents now they need you to heed them? Even we are better without their guidance becuase we have intuition love and we care. Here is the factoid. THE POLICE AND IN FACT EVERYONE IN CONTROL OR A POSITION OF POWER IS OF OR HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THAT GENERATION THAT HAD BABIES OUT OF UNCONTROL NOW WE BE CONTROLLED? Every time cops and parents are looking to make an example out of someone who had their own voice their own course of action she ran well is running , out of control behavior? NO! Did you know people are allowed to run when ever they want. by law. except when running from the police. She was not running from police she was running from her mother puttin her on the spot and using police as leverage when she challenged the leverage police instinct is to overpower and dominate the situation. Cops being as dumb as they are allow women firstly parents secondly power over children because only a mother trying to help her daughter see that we must obey or face death is a common thought today as we spiral deeper into a fully dumbass country all those great things we like about it will at some point be gone if we continue not regarding the constitution and keep getting further from the ideals this country holds so dear. say GOODBYE just everyone keep on ignoring the problems until comes in your immediate life your as good as gone becuase cops do not hold any discrimination or discern a situation but act decisively and without regard for even the most peaceful person especialy the MOST peaceful people!

This is something that should also be looked into, in Texas the cop that tazed the grandma was no Jack Lalane he was a bit overweight, he could of use his weight to bring her down not a tazer, looking at this cop who tazed the 14 yr old, he’s not in best shape at all, based in his heigh and weight anybody can outrun him , that is ashame that the law enforcement has to rely on weapons just to catch their suspects.

But in todays society children do run the show. You give them a funny look and they are on their cell phones claiming abuse. Or running off after the parents tell them no. There is no respect left. Law Enforcement handled the situation as needed. As far as hitting this girl in the head, it can’t be proven to be intent for bodily harm. In situations like this you have to be quick on your feet and in your mind as well. Walk a mile in their shoes. Until then you should not comment so harshly. They risk their lives daily to keep the peace as best as they can. I guess some of us have forgotten that. And have also forgotten that most of them have families just like you and I. Unlike working a regular nine to five like most, they are trying to uphold and enforce our laws. The only difference is many people hate law enforcement without even having met them. I think the reason most people hate them is because they have either broken the law and been caught or they know someone who knows someone. Its a horrid cycle that needs to be broken. We need to stand united behind our Law enforcement. And we can solely blame them, we must also take the other person or people into account as well.

93. I want you to ask your self if your 14 year old daughter had been texting older men explicit material, what would you do? Obviously if she was doing this you didnt raise your child correctly!!! I understand that children these days have access to all forms of communication! I am a father but I care enough about my child to be involved in his life! I have earned respect from my child not by, force but by caring! I have never once laid a hand on my child! If my child was asked by anyone to stop whether it be in the hall way of a school or on the sidewalk by a police officer, I gaurantee he would stop!!! If he didnt stop, he would have been doing something he wasn’t supposed to!! This is the accountability that children should have!! If you know right from wrong then you are willing and ready to accept the consecuences!! Obvioulsy this 14 year old girl didnt care about authority! She may not have done anything wrong at all, I dont know and I dont think any of you know because we werent there, but when a police officer asks you to stop I guarantee most of us would stop!! Now im not saying if we dont stop we should be tased, but if we didnt stop we probably had done something wrong?????? Scared??? I doubt it, the girl was aware that her mom was taking her to the police station because she had been texting older men! She was very aware of what was happening, the only thing she was scared of was getting caught or getting the man she was texting caught! More or less the child knew she had done something wrong she just didnt want to face the consequences thats why she ran!!! As far as getting tased that is very unfortunate she got it in the head! I feel sorry for her, but hey lets face it if she hadnt run, none of this would have happened! Oh by the way my dad was a police officer and he was killed in the line of duty by a 15 year old male with a hand gun! They were just walking down the street! Until you are a police officer dont tell me what you would have done! This is a crazy world we live in!! Bottom line we need to take responsibilty for our actions!!

94. I am a retired police officer. I feel bad for this girls misfortune, however when you are in a situation that requires an immediate decision, you do as you can. We must think of this girls own protection, what could happen if she continued to run. Also when you tell a suspect to stop and they do not, we have the right to then take the situation and are required to controll that situation. In other words we are not only trying to keep the peace, but keep others from harm as well. And each day that we are out there, we put our own lives at risk. I have known other officers just doing a routine traffic stop and end up shot and dead along side the road, because they were doing their job. And just because we wear a badge does not mean we are all a*^holes. If treated with respect in the first place we will treat you with respect as well.

95. If she was told to stop and did not and the officer was conducting an investigation then she should have stopped. If you think 14 year olds should not be held resposible you are wrong. I dont want her to be injured and I am sure the officer did not either. The tazer shocks you for 5 seconds. After that you feel fine 10 seconds later. It is to easy to monday morning quaterback a situation like this. You dont know what the officer knew at the time the girl ran away. I am sure the officer was not aiming for her head. I would be surprised if the girl got even a stich in her head. The tazer shots two small darts with small barbs on the end no bigger than a small fish hook. Oh yea if he was able to catch her while running how would you get her to stop. I suppose he would have likely tackled her. My guess is most of you have NOT chased someone and tried to get them to stop. Most of the time you end up on the ground.

96. The Police of this country are getting younger and more inexperinced with a REAL lack of proper training. They dedend on their weapon’s instead of their brains. It’s only going to get worse. Having been in law enforcement for eleven years, I have seen too many cases of “Excessive force” done by new officers.

You don’t run from the police. This fourteen year old is out of control and got what she deserved. Called “tough love.” Maybe her “rebellious” streak is over. Perhaps this action will keep her out of jail.

Comment by Nancy — July 21, 2009 @ 11:56 am

98. Unless you have been tasered i dont think is appropriate to have an oppinion on weather its acceptable to taser a 14 year old girl. Tasers are supposed to be non leathal defense tools not punishment for not obeying a police officer! I do believe some officers are getting out of hand with their authority case in point the ohp trooper who assualted a paramedic or the police officer who arrested a fire captain! yes police officers have some authority but with authority comes responsibility! Police officers should be held to a high level of scrutiny for their actions! If you cant control a teenage girl or a granny without using a taser then maybe you shouldnt be a cop!!!

Comment by scott — July 21, 2009 @ 11:57 am

99. You people are all idiots. It goes back to the old way of thinking. Everyone in this story are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Should the cop just set there and do nothing. He would be damned. Take a statement, he would be damned. Chase the girl and catch her,he would be damned, taser her he is damned. You all say the cop was out of shape to catch a 14 year old. You take your fat asses and chase any 14 year old, could you catch them? I think not! Look at all the different opinions on this matter. It’s no wonder that we have such a screwed up country. In other countries criminals are treated as criminals and do whatever it takes to take them out and they don’t have stupid lawsuits and get into trouble for doing there job. Simple thing though all she had to do was not run and there wouldn’t even be this for you people to bitch about.

Comment by Jim — July 21, 2009 @ 11:59 am

100. Sadly in today’s day and age the police use a taser as a means of punishing people who they don’t think show them enough respect. They don’t use them for protection, it is their first choice when they want to show people how tough they are.

Comment by Nick — July 21, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

101. I am tired of these Police that feel that they need to pull out some form of force for anybody they encounter. I would like to know what threat to this Police Chief this 14 year old girl posed. I think that this Police Chief needs to be prosecuted for his actions and let him see that a taser, especially in the head of a 14 year old girl is way more the excessive!!!!!!! MORON!

Comment by Greg — July 21, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

102. I don’t know where to start; I have never seen such ignorance in my life. For those of you that say she should have gotten shot with a taser all I can say is you are the reason the world is the way it is. We so-called adults are guardians to children whether they are ours or not. For beings that no longer look at themselves as animal our behavior is less then evolved. Speaking for myself I would not allow a child to be harmed regardless of the LAW. There are laws made by men and universal laws, the ones by men are nothing more than some people imposing there will on others and justifying by saying it’s just. From the beginning of history these with power ruled those without, if for a moment you think you are free, think again, there no such thing. Any one that thinks this girl should have been tasered should be removed from the gene pool; you do nothing more then bring down the human race.

Comment by Tom — July 21, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

103. Jim .. I’m pretty sure anything other than shoot her in the head with a taser would have been “not damned”.

These were distributed to police to use when their safety was at risk, not as a method of punishment.

Comment by Nick — July 21, 2009 @ 12:02 pm

104. Kids must learn that for every action, there is going to be a reaction. Why would the parent drive her child to a police station in the first place? I do not agree with using the taser in this situation. He should have allowed the teen to go about her business. Then there’s another host of problems. What if she had been hit by a vehicle, or wound up in the hands of a deviant sexual predator?

It all starts with the parents folks… Let’s deal with our demons…

Comment by SBW — July 21, 2009 @ 12:03 pm

105. All and all there was absolutely no good reason for tasering a child that committed no crime. You have to ask yourself if the officer identified himself as a police officer or just ran behind her scaring her then got lazy and thought it would be cool to taser her.

That cop should be fired on the spot for abusing his power. He should be made an example of and be tasered until he craps himself and see how he likes it. This is coming from a guy who’s family are all cops.

It is unfortunate that we live in a society that is afraid of the law and government. It needs to be the other way around. Police and government need to be afraid of the people. For crying out loud, they work for us, they’re our servants.

Suppose this child had heart problems and he accidentally killed her. There are millions of people with heart problems and others with pace makers. Is that a risk that the police are willing to make. I think it is time for a revolution. Who’s with me!

A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL RUNNING FROM A GROWN MAN, AND THEN BEING TASERED IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER. IF SHE ENDS UP WITH BRAIN DAMAGE, WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED TO SHOW HER WHAT DISCIPLINE MEANS. OBVIOUSLY, THIS MAN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO CARRY A DEADLY WEAPON, MUCH LESS BE WEARING A UNIFORM AND BADGE. WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT DISCIPLINE, SELF CONTROL AND CARRYING WEAPONS—–U.S. MARINE CORPS FOR 25 YEARS. THE NEED FOR BETTER HEALTH CARE SHOULD START WITH MORE PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATIONS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL.

Lets not hold anyone accountable for thier actions. Arent we free Tom? How arent we free? Because we are slaves to our phones and pay taxes. Because someone is holding us accountable for actions? Is it because when we speed we get pulled over? What about our country tells you we arent free? Keep in mind your freedom must not interfere with anothers freedom. Just because you dont have the right do anything you want to does not mean your not free. You are allowed to vote your leadership with out fear of repercussions, you are free to complain on this website about the world and the law that you think is worthless keeps the strong in our world from taking everything you own. If you want to tell someone they arent free try traveling more than 50 miles out of surburia into the real world. Where majority of the world gets killed for voting wrong, gets killed for sending thier women to school, gets killed for opening up a school that allows girls to go and a world that starves thier poor while one ruler builds palace after palace. Tell the people who have died for our country and the rest that are away from thier families to keep our country from being attacked that we arent free. How about you go back to your asphalt drive way and your cheap light beer and keep the ignorant complaints about our country to your neighbor..better yet he probably doesnt want to hear it…talk to the dog!

If my 15 year old ran from a police officer or any other adult in authority, you can bet he would be in trouble at home! These kids today have way too many rights!!! When I grew up I had rights! I’m a 39 yr old man in pretty damn good shape. I’m sure I can outrun or even out fight most officers, but I have enough respect for the badge and enough common sense to know if a ploice officer tells you to do something…..YOU DO IT!!! You can sue them later if you so choose, but quit armchair quarterbacking everything the cops do. They’re human and sometimes people do some pretty stupid things. Yes he was wrong to tase some dumbass little kid for running away, but would you rather he tackle her in the middle of the street grinding her face into the pavement? “Help police. 122. Lets see, it all started when
1. 14 year old “girl” was sending dirty texts and pictures of herself to older men.
2. Her mother confronted her and the girl assualted her.
3. Arriving at the police station she ran.
4. She ignored a policeman’s order and ran.
Should the cop of tasered her, no. Even if he couldn’t catch her then they, most likely would of later or she would of gone home.

But, the main over look here is that she is out of control. She is taking a lot of dangerous steps that is going to get her into even more trouble.
Her mother says “she is just a child”. Hey can’t you handle a child? Guess not.
But, the family is busy makeing a shopping list for after the settlement that is sure to come and we will end up supporting the spoiled brat after she has three kids, a drug problem, and is on wellfare.

128. I agree that the police are not above the law and should be punished for their actions. Just because someone runs or attempts to escape doesn’t justify shooting or tasering someone when they are captured. Extreme measures such as tasers should only be use if the individual is still resisting after being captured. Police are using tasering as a means of punishment for making them chase you, or even talking back to them in a negative manner. How many more deaths of healthy individuals are needed before tasers are outlawed? At least require the police to carry heart fibulators for individuals who suffer heart attacks as a result of being tasered.

129. In what portion of this article did you read that this “Child” was diagnosed with any “disorder”. I appears to me that the only DISORDER she suffers from is a total lack of RESPECT for authority of any kind. She has obviously been treated as “JUST A KID” for far to long and NEVER been required to take responsibility for her actions. SHE ASSAULTED HER MOTHER….do you think a MOTHER takes you to the Police Department for help if she can handle you by herself???? Being a “CHILD” does not excuse one from BEHAVING LIKE A RESPONSIBLE HUMAN BEING! Even the YOUNGEST of children are taught MANNERS AND RESPECT–this “Child” was obviously NOT PAYING ATTENTION. How old do you have to be BEFORE YOU ARE HELD RESPONSIBLE for your actions???????? How old do you have to be to understand that their are CONSEQUENCES – and not always plesant or expected ones — for the CHOICES you make?

130. It is getting too easy to just tase people. Taser should be outloawed for EVERYONE. For years, law enforcement got the job done with out them. They were supposed to be INSTEAD OF A GUN which could mortally wound someone. Now they are beginning to be used frequently and for any reason and we seem to be exploring ways to justify their use…. BAD MOVE – where does it stop? when is it not right? The ONLY time I could see the use of a taser is IF the officer can say that he would have used a gun. That keeps it nice and simple. He would not have used a gun on a 14 year old, a grandma, a traffic violator. Pleople – we need to stop this NOW.

132. Un-freakin-believable…every time I read a story like this, it makes me realize just how close the U.S. is to becoming a police-state. The police are not the law; they represent the law. As citizens, we have the constitutional right to be protected from the use of excessive force. Something has happened to the collective police mentality in the last few years. A confrontational attitude seems to permeate every interaction the police have with the public; no matter how minor the situation. Aggressiveness and asserting control of the situation through any means possible is now the “New Black” in the police world. It’s as if the “Policeman 101″ text book has been replaced by the TV show “Cops” and the famous phrase “To Protect and Serve” is now “To Subdue and Arrest”.
Before the more conservative among you paint me as criminal-loving liberal, just know that I have seen this argument from both sides: My grandfather was a patrolman in one of our nation’s largest cities and I have personally been the victim of an illegal tasing – for simply asking a police officer why he wanted to see my I.D. It’s been 18 years since Rodney King…apparently we’ve not learned a dam# thing.

133. I read through some of the comments made and it makes me realize how STUPID people are. First look at the real facts before you comment. the person who said the cop chased her down with his car. Where did you get that from? Every story I have read said that he was chasing her on foot. Second, I have raised 3 children and if any one of them ran from the cops and was being stupid like that, they had better hope the cops get ahold of them before I do, cuz the taser may be the nicest thing that happens to their backside. You people are acting like the cop did this on purpose. You are saying he didn’t need to get her in the head. Do you really think that if he was aiming for her head the other dart would have went in her hip? Come on, people, think before speaking. What would you be saying if the cop had continued to chase her and she ran out in front of a car and got killed? Then you would be saying if he had tasered her she wouldn’t have gotten hit by the car. Make up your minds. Can police do anything right by you. NO!!! But if it goes the way you think it should it is OK. Kids now are such spoiled brats, it scares me. They have no respect for anyone or anything. I agree with the statement, maybe the mother AND father should step up and be parents. Maybe now the girl will have some respect for authority. She is a brat. She needs to learn a lesson. I will make a bet she won’t run from the cops again. Doesn’t it concern you that the mother had cuts on her? Doesn’t say how they got there, but I will lay odds the girl had something to do with it. It amazes me what kids are allowed to get away with now. My parents would have beat me within an inch of my life. THANK GOD FOR THE OLD WAY OF LIFE!!!

Comment by Angie — July 21, 2009 @ 1:20 pm

134. I think she got about half of what she deserves. Even the mom admits that she drove to the station for help because she could not control her. If you ask someone else to control your child because you can’t, you then don’t get to complain about how they do it!! Did the mom just expect that the police would just let her hit them until she calmed down? When the threat of the police is not enough, then you have to go to something more.

And for those who say that she shouldn’t have been tasered, the officer tasered her for her own safety!! She was exhibiting violent, erratic, careless behavior. She ran in front of an officer’s police car without stopping for traffic. Should he have let her get hit or should he stop her by any means neccessary? If my kid is so out of control that I can’t control her and the police can’t without tasing them, TASE ‘EM! I’d rather have a tased child then a dead child. Further more, what about the assualt of her mom? Where are the charges for that? This “little girl” needs to grow up fast and learn some consequences for her behavior. The only way that’s going to happen is to make her take the punishments that she deserves.

140. Ok first off I agree that this is a horrible thing that happened and I wish this teen a speedy recovery. But, unless you were there, you have no way of knowing what truly happened. The media distorts things to make them look worse than they really are, we all know that. And, unless you have been trained in how to use a taser, (which I have), you would have no idea how they work. The further away a target is the wider apart the two prongs from the taser become. The top prong hits where the red laser is hitting and the bottom prong hits somewhere below that. Like I say it is according to how far away the target is. The officer may have been aiming somewhere other than the head and the second prong became lodged in the head region. Like I said before we do not know the exact events that occured, so please don’t be so quick to judge. He may have been justified or he may not have been, only God knows that right now. May God bless you all. :)

They use STAPLES instead of stitches anytime they are sewing up the tissue that covers the skull. If it only took 18 staples, it wasn’t LIFE THREATENING by any stretch of the imagination! 149. The sad part of this story to me is two-fold. One, Here is another parent who can not control their children. This example is so pathetic she goes to the police department for help concerning a cell phone. Second, the police department is not the place to take a child to discuss cell phone issues…the police should have been much smarter and told them to handle it at home instead of getting involved and botching it up. I’m sure this outraged parent will now sue the city taking even more $$$ from areas where it’s needed.

I would have solved the problem simply. I have two well adjusted, intelligent, respectful, and good humored college bound sons so I know what I’m talking about. Here’s the solution. You say “I am paying for this phone so it’s usage is up to me. Continue to argue and the account will be cancelled. Also, It will be crushed into little pieces by a tool of my selection and thrown into the trash.” Problem solved, discussion over…no need to go to the police. Control your kids people, not the other way around!

150. Andrew, I was speaking metaphorically. I was only saying that just because there’s a law that allows a child to be tasered, does not make it right. I never implied anything negative about this country or the men and women that protect her. I only have the highest regard for all our men and women in the armed forces both here and abroad. 154. yes it did occur to me that tasering did not happen in the old way of life. We had respect for authority. That is why I said that. I never said it was ok, however what would be saying right now if that girl was dead because of her irrational behavior. I have seen up front and very close the affects of a taser. It got used on my nephew because he was resisting the police. I said the same thing to him, you should have listened and stopped like they told you to. I have been reading other stories about this girl. She was not going to cooperate in any way with the police. The police shouldn’t have had to get involved in the first place, except for to arrest her for pornogrophy. What I am saying is the police are being called all kinds of names, when maybe the taser was not the best choice of action, but the possible consequences had he not I think are scarier then the fact he did. The parents could be going to their daughters funeral. No matter what that cop would have done, the girl would be getting notice because of a cop’s action instead of for breaking the law, for first, distributing naked pictures of herself in text messages to older MEN, then for resisting a police officer. If you disobey the law, you pay the price.

Comment by Angie — July 21, 2009 @ 1:52 pm

155. Why is it that the police have the right to abuse children (this is a case of abuse and excessive force) for minor offenses but a parent is threaten if he/she spanks their child on the bottom to send a message. These officers do not punish because they love the child and they are not Child Psychologists trained to deal with the emotional issues children face. We OK what law enforcement does knowing that what they do is not necessarily in the best interest of the child but because they can. Their reaction is usually dependent upon the way they feel at that particular moment or how they feel about the person they are abusing. I know not all law enforcement officers act this way, but the ones who don’t are covering up for the ones who do.

There is a case in Philadelphia right now where a police officers son rear ended a woman and the argued with her. He went and got his father who was on patrol elsewhere. He left his beat went to the store where the woman was pulled his service pistol and put it against her throat. This was all caught by the store surveillance cameras.

Until we demand that government officials and good officers stop protecting abusive officers our children (and others) will remain in harms way by the very people sworn to protect us. I believe a police officer should serve in the military first. Show your commitment to service of you country and then your community. You experience things in military training that help you when it comes to doing your job as a police officer.

156. The officer made a bad mistake. No one should lay a hand or weapon on another child, since this child was not breaking the law. The stupid mother couldn’t handle her daughter and thought the police would. the officer and the mother are at fault. Mother get your act together and stop depending on others to do your job when it gets hard. and the officer, quit trying to take out your agressions on children!!

157. It is the parents fault TOTALLY!!! They should have never let a 14 year old escalate a situation under THEIR control and have to bring the police in to control the matter! Failure is on their part, not the police. I would have tased her at the station for wasting my time! Then I would have tased her mom for good measure…idiots!!!

Comment by brdfan — July 21, 2009 @ 2:06 pm

158. Anybody that supports these activities should be tasered. As we give more and more power to the police they use less common sense under the pretense” it’s the law”. Respect from the law needs to start with the law enfocement community first. I have seen and personnally witness officers abusing there power to generate tickets or get arrests to promote there careers. There is no question she was scared to death and probably was left in a room contemplating the worst. If people were not terrified by the police maybe they would respect them.

Comment by David Njaastad — July 21, 2009 @ 2:07 pm

159. The thing I like about tasers is when you shock someone they stiffen up and slam down hard on the ground. A defense could be that the taser didn’t produce trauma to the head the asphalt did. Ah sweet use of excessive force. Maybe they should give a taser gun to her mother so she can shock her again if she gets out of line. It could make a great parental discipline device. You get out of line sonny and ZAP! no more problem. That’s the way the police use it and since its a non lethal way to force a person into submission, why not make tasers available en mass? But parents, please don’t spank your kids cause that’s child abuse.

Comment by Paul — July 21, 2009 @ 2:11 pm

160. The large percentage of police officers do a fine job and are not abusive. Funny enough, I have never broken the law beyond a speeding ticket and surprise surprise I have not had any problems with police officers. We only hear the bad stories because they are sensationalized. I know exactly who all the people in this thread who are hating on police would call if they felt their life was threatened. The same people William Ayers called when he felt threatened…even though he hates them and tried to kill them. This world is oh so crazy and ironic…

Comment by Bruce — July 21, 2009 @ 2:13 pm

161. The only people I know terrified by police are the ones who should be terrified. I would venture to say that 99% of law abiding citizens have no fear of the police community in general. Do I want them governing my affairs, NO! So I don’t invite them to do so. Grow up and be responsible for your actions – accountability begins with yourself, then is taught by example to the ones you love….

Chief Hatcher should have just plugged her in the head with his service revolver and “saved” her from making any more mistakes in her life.

Comment by Davey — July 21, 2009 @ 2:17 pm

163. I think most comments seem to be leaning toward support for the law enforcement officials. As for myself, my 20 year old disabled daughter was tased twice in our home. I had called them because she was very upset about something. I was sure that she’d get help and they would get an ambulance to transport her to the hospital.
(She’s also on medication, and is learning disabled.) I was horrified when he tazed her the first time, but she was hit in the stomach by the gun, as she immediately did as he said and went to the floor. Then he also tased her in the back, after which he called an ambulance. My family believes I should have filed a lawsuit. In my opinion, most of the time it could be avoided because some incidents lead to death of the victims. S.F.

166. brdfan I agree. People who hate police always tend to ignore the “victim” as if they were doing nothing and had nothing to do with the incident. They feel the victim is somehow justified in all of their actions. Kind of like (cmach) above who infers that 14 year old girls tend to get “mouthy” due to hormones so that makes it ok. Really?? Not ok for me. Not ok for my kids…and they know it! This is why high schools are full of smart ass mouthy kids. Too many parents think this type behavior is consistently accepatabe.

Comment by Bruce — July 21, 2009 @ 2:26 pm

167. A lot of people seem to be for the girl getting lobotomized. Just remember next time a cop decides to pull you over for something you think is unjust; better not argue, I’m sure the officer will find it easier to Tazer you than listen to your ramblings.

I think a lot of cops are getting their jollies tazering just about anybody. Maybe pay-back from years of abuse? Maybe they just got a new toy in their arsenal and want to “see what it does”?

Face facts! If you are so unfit that catching a 14 year old girl (probably in heels) seems like to much of a work-out…hmm…maybe you should be seeking a new line of work?

Comment by Jason — July 21, 2009 @ 2:26 pm

168. Sounds to me like the girl was quickly working her way to being a first-rate slut. Texting and sending porn to older men, obviously isn’t what 14 year old girls SHOULD be doing. Nor should she be raising her hand to a parent. If I’d done that, I’d have been searching for my head in the corner. So many kids aren’t being raised by “real” parents, it’s totally pathetic. I’m in the mid 40’s, and if my parents had caught me doing something like this, I wouldn’t be around to speak of it today. At the time, I wished they’d have lightened up, but now, I’m glad they didn’t. If, by chance, I HAD gotten into trouble with the cops, my parents would have spoken to him/her, asked what stupid thing I did to make them get involved, then, after hearing their story, would have killed me. Plain and simple – they never would have been angry at a police officer, they’d have said “well, she had it comin’.”

I used to live in NM, and I’ve seen how the girls there have gotten completely out of control (I’m sure they have in other places, too). Had a friend who is a single mom, has 2 girls. She’s in court with them, they’re always in trouble, and they both became whores before they even reached 14, givin’ it away to anyone who showed up at their door, while mom was workin’ her butt off, trying to make a better life for them. They were lazy, rebellious, uneducated, and totally disgusting. If she’d been a parent to them instead of trying to be their friend, they may have stood a chance. Now, it’s normal to live like a dirtbag. PARENTS HAVE TO STOP BEING SUCH SPINELESS TWITS AND START BEING PARENTS. When they throw a fit, stop them. Do you really think the rest of us want to hear your child prove in public that THEY are the ones running the show?? When I see this, I want to smack the child for being a brat AND the parent for being so stupid. It’s kids like this who are going to grow up and overcrowd our prisons even more than they are now, have a million kids with different dads, beat their parents, have zero respect, welfare, drugs, you name it — they’re gonna be total losers.

TAKE CONTROL, PEOPLE. YOU MADE IT, YOU RAISE IT.

The officer told her to stop and she didn’t, the brat. Big deal he tasered her. Maybe now she’ll think twice about doing something so rebellious and stupid and follow orders from an adult.

Comment by Dani — July 21, 2009 @ 2:28 pm

169. Susan, If you called the police because you could not control your daughter, you obviously feared for your safety and that of your child. That officer has no way of knowing your particular situation other than what dispatch has told them. If she had you (her mom) in a defensive situation, what the hell you think was going on in the cops mind??? If it was a “medical” situation, you should have called the ambulance your self… Again, typical grandstanding and “Oh, look what happened to me” bull crap…

Comment by brdfan — July 21, 2009 @ 2:30 pm

170. Sure Susan, call the police then sue them for using a non-lethal taser to control your out of control daughter whom they have no idea is violent or not. Would you have prefereed they used physical force on her? I’m sure if they tried that and she hit her head you would want to sue becuase they did something wrong. Should they beat her with a flashlight? Shoot her? Civilians who have no clue always second guess police. They are in a conundrum. They don’t wan’t killed or injured by people but they can only use enough force to get the job done without being sued. If you want an ambulance call one and leave the police out if it. I’m betting your leaving out the part where your daughter is capable if injuring someone and that’s why you called the police in the first place.

Comment by Bruce — July 21, 2009 @ 2:34 pm

171. Jason, I wouldn’t argue with a cop because I think something is unjust. That is what the courts are for and I am not stupid. The fact that you are going to argue with the cop makes you prime “taze” material. And then I’m sure you would sue…right?

Comment by Bruce — July 21, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

We are all to blam for the behavior of the police, becuase when people that we think deserve harsh treatment be cause of our bias are assaulted by police we say they had it comming, there animals….. All injustice needs to offend us. Not just when its a 14 year old girl.

174. Jerry, it requires it when the mother goes to the police asking for help because she can’t even control her little brat concerning a cell phone. Sorry to burst your “It takes a village” bubble, but I personally had nothing to do with the cop doing what he did. He is personally responsible for his actions. Which frankly I think were stupid but he was PERSONALLY responsible. Understand? Society did not make him do it. I did not make him do it. HE did it! This is the problem today, trying to blame people actions on other people, society, parents, race or whatever. My God, I’m just typing on the internet and this is my fault all because I prefer harsh treatment for law breakers? Some sort of collective bad charma has been created by me and helped the cop make a bad decision?! Wow! You really believe that?!

Parents need to teach respect to children nowadays, respect doesnt mean to abuse phisically a child. Instead to have patience and understanding and hopefully all falls into place. Out of all these the mother has a lot of fault..

Which takes books off of school shelves, fire trucks out of stations, teachers out of the classroom, road out of repair, etc? And if you think it comes from insurance, if it does, the price for insurance is in every service you get. The girl should not have been tazed…pay for all her medical bills plus some extra for the pain in the butt of it all but if there are no lasting injuries there should not be 10s of millions of dollars awarded.

178. I spent over 20 years working with kids as a counselor and teacher. Mr. Hatcher needs To BE Fired immediately. What on earth was he thinking, as he was not even initially involved in the said Mother-daughter incident.

Unfortunately, his actions were one of control, not authority, not catering to the law, but control, nothing more or less. And now look at the damage he has done permanently to that child.

Sure many police officers have control issues, but this POLICE CHIEF, acted totally irresponsibly, out of his personal, NOT PROFESSIONAL, want to control a situation of which he was not yet involved in.

many officers feel empowerment by their weapons, and this man took such out of line, ignoring his vow to PROTECT AND SERVE. Instead he controlled and hurt, thus damaged. HE SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY, not put behind a desk, but fired and stripped of his badge and weapons immediately and forevermore.

IF you cannot feel safe with a cop, then who are you supposed to feel safe with.

Comment by nancy — July 21, 2009 @ 3:04 pm

179. This is ridiculous. What would have happened to the mother if she had tasered her daughter. She would be going to jail for child abuse. The officer should be fired and arrested for assault and battery. The city and the officer should pay for this abuse of power.

Comment by Terry White — July 21, 2009 @ 3:04 pm

180. I am sick and tired of this bleeding heart commentary after the fact! Yes it is sad that whatever happened that got a lead stuck in her head caused more damage than was intended. However, taser pins are not exact like bullets and officers are trained to hit the body where they are most effective. So all you people that are screaming bloody murder, go back to sleep cause you have no information to argue with. Let’s place the blame of this entire episode on the cause. Why was MOM bringing her domestic issue with her DAUGHTER to a POLICE station in the first place. Dicipline is not a duty of the cities municipal police department. If MOM cannot control her own daughter then the fault is early on in raising her and now she should be paying for her counselor, not bagging her load on the police. What was she doing on the cell phone with her if she just drove her to the police in the first place? The C.O.P. never should have gotten involved in the domestic dispute unless MOM was charging her daughter with physical abuse at which time she was now a suspect and gets all the rights and privleges of a suspect including the right to be arrested. Running from the law is still a CRIME, in case you people have forgotten. I am tired of “you cops don’t do anything except eat donuts” until they actually attempt to arrest someone and have to deal with the resistance ( like the grandma video who dared to be tased and got what she deserved ) and are still arrested and now have another set of charges when all they had to do was cooperate and come quietly if they feel they were innocent. It is all in who’s perspective you see this, but please shut up if you don’t have all the facts. AND don’t get me started on 9/11 !!!!!

Comment by Andrew — July 21, 2009 @ 3:05 pm

181. Don’t blame the police. People and yes even children need to get back to basics! And one of them is “respect”. When did it become the normal to diregard what a police office tells you to do?
Maybe the parents should be held more accountable with teaching and disciplining their children which also includes teaching to respect your authorities. Far fewer would be in trouble knowing that the ending to their disrespect will be a taser in the head.

Comment by Patrick — July 21, 2009 @ 3:08 pm

182. She got what was coming to her. When the Police or any adult tells you to stop, that means stop! Kid’s these days don’t listen and think they can do whatever they want and the parents let them, so theres the whole problem! That because the parents don’t teach their kids any manners or teach them to be respectfull at all. There all to busy or something. If you are that to busy, then don’t have kids if your not going to raise them right! All of you and all the parents that let kids do whatever they want and allow them to act the way they do these days are to blame. But people are to dumb to understand that, and then they ask dumb questions of why kids are so unrulely these days! I have two daughter and one son, and none of my kids act like the dumb kids now. Why because they were brought up to have respect for adults, and to have manners. Even my own kids ask what is wrong with all these other kids today and ask why they act the way they do? So grow up people, and act like adults and raise your kids right and you wont have to worry about the next kid getting tasered! Maybe that know it all 14 year old learned to listen, but I doubt it!

Comment by Dan — July 21, 2009 @ 3:09 pm

183. Answer me this… if he hadn’t had a taser, what would he have done? take out his gun and shoot her down? of course she ran, that would be a normal reaction. Has anybody heard of “fight or flight”? Perhaps he wasn’t physically able to run after her, maybe he is out of shape or whatever. He could have returned to his cruiser and follow her until he caught up with her, Or he could have asked for help from other officers in bringing her back to the station. As observed before by others, she did not commit any crimes, was not armed with any sort of weapon so there is no way shape or form to have used the taser on this young lady. His life was never in any danger so he is very very wrong to have done what he did. Her family should get a good lawyer and sue the pants off of him. Had no recourse? How many times have we heard that from police everytime they commit violent acts against people? They are not above the law!!!!

Comment by Raymond — July 21, 2009 @ 3:13 pm

184. We are Americans.
You must be a Canadian. The mother took her daughter to the police because she had been attacked and could not control her. The girl was 14, check the prison and jail records to determine how many 14 and unders are in there for violent crimes. When a police officer issues a command it needs to be obeyed. A TAZER is not only used if there is a deadly threat, it is used to make a suspect adhear to direction. She was told to stop, she ran, she was told she would be TAZERED if she did not stop, she did not stop, end of story.

I am sure the head was not the intended target. The extent of her wound does not fit the weapons profile. During TAZAR training police shoot each other, so they know how to properly use the weapon. The barbs barely penetrate the skin. How did it enter the skull. Something is wrong with that picture.

Let the investigation take its course before you cry foul.

You are the perfect example of being the victim, and it is not your fault syndrome. Until accountability can be instilled into a child you are going to have authority issues. This kid couldn’t be reasoned with, didn’t want to hear what the ADULTS had to say, and took things in her own hands. Look where it got her. Her fault? Not at all.. Her parents fault?? ABSOLUTELY!!! You need to relook control vs. authority issues…..They invited the police into their affairs and they all payed the price. The Chief is innocent. I believe cops abuse the tazer. They beliver that it is non leathal and what an excuse to use one if someone does not comply with any order. Prior to tasers, you would use billy sticks if necessary force was needed. How many times did you see those used. 195.
Jason, I wouldn’t argue with a cop because I think something is unjust. That is what the courts are for and I am not stupid. The fact that you are going to argue with the cop makes you prime “taze” material. And then I’m sure you would sue…right?
Lol. I don’t argue with police officers (Not entirely true. I have relatives who are cops!). In fact the last time a officer pulled me over (Turn signal out.), we had a nice chat, he told me to get it fixed, and I complied.

This is about the ABUSE of Tazers. When does it stop? A Tazer is a “less-lethal” form of a gun; just like those shotguns that shoot bean bags (They can kill too.). There are situations when they should be used. If you replaced the 14 year old girl with a 20 year old man, or a 80 year woman in a wheelchair, I still wouldn’t think the use of a Tazer was warranted. And then the officer is so inept she gets plugged in the head?

The 72 year old woman from Texas DESERVED to get the Tazer. She would just not comply. Did the 14 year old girl get the chance? NO! It was just easier than chasing after her.

197. Cops are pigs and have no respect for anyone but themselves. Just because they have a badge doesnt give them the right to rape, kill, steal the list goes on. Someone needs to tazer his head (both of them) How many people have to die before they realize that tazers are dangerous. cops are a bunch of peices of shit. My sister was killed by a cop and hes still out there murdering more people. My sister was a strait A college student graduating with a civil engineering degree. My mom was raped by cops. So i hate cops and every time one dies its one less piece of crap on the streets. I’ve NEVER met a good cop and don’t believe there are any out there. I wouldnt call 911 to save my life my sister did and they killed her for it. So those of you that agree with the cop probably are cops or have family that are on the pig force.

Fourteen year old female and did not obey a cop. Let me ask, if he had not of tazered and instead of arrested her for not stopping, then gone to court, what do you think the judge would have done? NOTHING!!!!! What a joke and waste of all’s time. The cop knew that. If he did’t then why not? He is the one with experience. I believe they (cops) love the new tazer toy and the abilty to extract judgement and punishment without trial. I wonder if he has kids and tazers them if they don’t come to attention when spoken to. Cops being cops.

204. You people make me sick. I love all of the armchair quarterbacks. Instead of just a comment of whether or not the cop should have used the tazer, you take it one stop further and generalize about all police. My husband is a police officer and risks his life every day to protect ALL people-child or adult, scumbag or not. This cheif was a part of an unfortunate decision that went wrong. Had the tazer not hit her in the head, she would be fine. Its incredibly painful, but it stops. He has little control over where the prongs will shoot out – especially if he was running and did not have a steady hand. What is pathetic about this whole situation is that the cheif will most likely have to resign. The misbehaving out of controls family willl sue and probably settle with the city. I would put money on the fact that all we will hear now is how she was such a great kid and an honor student. That’s just how it works.

And really, you are going to tell me that this chick didn’t know NOT to run from the police? At 14 I knew that. Hell, at 4 I probably knew that.

Kids get away with murder these days. LITERALLY, check the minor death toll in chicago this year. Its absolutely pathetic. Maybe if people started to actually fear consequences like they use to, some of these stupid events would stop happening.

206. This police had no authority or responsibility to apprehend the girl. So, he should be 1) arrested for risk of injury to a minor, and 2) demoted for professional incompetence. Stick a badge on someone and they are suddenly supposed to be respected? There are far too many police who forget for whom they work.

Comment by MRell — July 21, 2009 @ 3:59 pm

207. I get the feeling that many people did not watch the new video regarding this incident.

First, the reason the mother and daughter were at the police station was the daughter’s unruly behaviour. The news clip stated that the mother had brought her daughter to the police station because her 14 year old daughter had been sending “explicit cell phone messages” and pictures she was sendnig to older men (not boys). Then, when the two were in front of the police station, the daughter physically abused the mother. It appears that the Police Chief witnessed the daughter strike the mother. At that point the Police Chief had just witnessed a crime occur in his presence. One of the many duties of a police officer is to investigate crimes and to apprehend the suspects of crimes. Because the Police Chief had just witnessed a crime and the suspect was attempting to flee the scene he was more than likely justified in using force to apprehend the suspect. He warned the 14 year old that he would use the tazer on her if she did not stop. The 14 year old later admitted that she was aware that the Chief was a police officer and was aware that he had told her to stop, but chose to run away regardless.

One thing that people need to consider is what the Police Chief was going through at the time. He was attempting apprehend the suspect of a violent crime (remember, she had just phyiscally abused her mother). The Police Chief did not know the exact age of the daughter at the time of the incident (which more than likely did not last more than one or two minutes total). The Police Chief had not had an opportunity to search the teenager to verify that she did not possess any weapons. Also, the Police Chief did not know if the teenager had any warrants or wants for her arrest (which could explain why she was fleeing).

So, what did the officer do? He warned her that if she did not stop, he would use the taser. Would some of you preferred that he let her run and then tackle her to the ground (which often times causes more injury than a taser). Or, he could have used his baton (again, more injury than that of a taser). He could have used pepper spray (but that is often ineffective if there is too much distance, or if there is wind outside). He also could have let her go and given her a chance to brandish a weapon (which he didn’t know if she had one or not at the time because she had not been searched yet) or obtain one during the chase.

Tasers are considered less-than-lethal force. They are instruments that officers are allowed to use to gain compliance to their orders when the threat level is not that to justify the use of deadly force.

Many police officers will tell you (and probably an expert will testify if this case ever goes to trial) that the mere threat of using a taser will cause most people to comply with the orders of a police officer because the general public knows what a taser does.

It appears that the Police Chief, on these facts, was more than likely justified in using the taser against the girl.

For those of you who think that a police officer should not use a taser unless their life is in danger just ask yourself, why does a police officer carry a gun? If the police officer’s life had been in danger or if they had been threatened with serious bodily injury, then the gun would have been used. Police officers carry tasers, pepper spray, and other items to deal with people who act just like this teenage girl did.

Now, I have to admit, I’d be upset if my teenaged daughter was tased by the police. But I’d also be upset if she was sending explicit text messages and pictures to older men.

Let us not lose sight of the real problem here. The parents let this kid get out of control and now they are going to try to cash in on their lack of discipline.

If the girl wants to run away, let her. We know who she is and we will catch up to her later after she calms down and figure out the problem at that point. Most Officers, Deputies, and Troopers are good and try to do a good job in a very difficult situation. Don’t let the actions of few tarnish the shield of all.

213. Yesterday, my three year old had a tantrum, threw his ball at me, then ran down the sidewalk, almost into the street. He screamed very loudly when I caught up with him to bring back.

Now, per police chief logic, this little three year old should have been tazered as he did not follow commands.

This mistaken approach that police have to chase and apprehend everyone is stupid and counterproductive. I once had a cop brought into my ED dead from a crash in a high-speed chase. Why the chase? Some unarmed guy, with no prior record, tried unsuccessfully to break into a house. Police created a risk to the public that did not previously exist by chasing the guy. Why the crash? Mismatched, wrong-sized tires were put on in the police auto shop. They killed their own guy! But, no, they have to blame some petty thief instead of facing the truth like honest men.

Police just do what they are trained to do! That’s the problem, poor training and a lot of CYA when things go wrong.

As far as the lack of guidance, that is exactly the problem – it starts with parenting and instilling responsibility. The lesson the girl should learn from all this is that it is better to do what you are told than to suffer the consequences of your own ignorance. The police are not to blame here folks – the parents are! The police are charged to execute their duties – especially when they have witnessed the crime firsthand. Parents are responsible for teaching their children right from wrong. If parents fail to do so, someone has to step in. What’s going to happen to our country when these teens become adults and run the Nation? Work ethics, Responsibility, Control, where will it come from if their not taught???

226. I was reading through some of these comments, and i have to say, some of you people are pathetic. As a american soldier, i can’t believe that i’m fighting to defend most of you. For most of you that said that she deserved it, are a bunch of incoherent idiots that’ll believe anything you see or hear on t.v. None of you can say that you were there and know the real story. And for those who think that tazers are “non lethal”, think again. They’re just not as lethal as handguns, you can still died and get seriously injured by them. And i think as a soldier trained in combat and various scenarios, that police officer could have handled the situation ALOT differently. I don’t think it would take much for a grown man, like himself, to apprehend and take down a 14 year old female…who unfortunately, had mental issues. And what kid, or any other average person wouldn’t run out of fear if they saw a tazer or any other weapon pointed at them from afar. And the only reason why he shot her was because he over weight and out of shape, just like every other police officer across america, and if he were to give chase he wouldn’t have the energy to do it. But instead he chose to shoot an “unarmed” kid in the back of the head, obviously from poor aim, with a tazer that had enough power to penetrate her skull and split her scalp open and leave her with 18 staples and 6 stitches, possibly left her brain dead, or could’ve killed her. Could the police officer took on the situation more differently? Yes. Was it really necessary to use excessive force without exploring other options. No. And nothing was accomplished afterwards. It wasn’t like she was a criminal or terrorist he was going after, but i’m guessing it was okay to shoot her down like one. And for those of you who say she deserved it, i hope the same happens to you.

227. Ok.. I have heard many of you say that it is right that the cop was doing his job.. etc. One folk said it right, they are “paid” to protect and to serve.. they are supposed to jail the criminals, fugitives well you get the picture. At what point is she a criminal? The one’s that should be behind bars are those dirty muthaf….s receiving the picture probably requesting them. I have 5 kids one on the way oldest being 16 going to be 17 very soon and I have not had this kinds of issues. I have rules that need to be followed. At the age of 13 she thought she could talk back at me being disrespectful 3 slaps the the kisser and problem gone. I have not had to deal with talking back to me her mom or anybody for that matter. She is in advanced placement classes and what not. So everything starts with the parents I hope we all can agree on this, however I do believe it was wrong judgement on the mother taking her child to the PD what was that going to resolve? Now a days you don’t have to go the station, call the station and they will send a unit over for whatever reason. The child should’ve never ran off, on the same note I can see where she can be scared to be there because of what she has/had on that phone and was going to be exposed. I have been against taser guns since their existence and believe that it has caused many more deaths then there should have been. Humans can’t tell by plain sight whether or not the person they are tasing to be healthy or have any conditions that may have deadly effects.

Both Rich’s,

You guys are unbelievable thinking that what this officer did was right, to think that corporal punishment is OK.. WTF is in your guy’s brain? This girl is in ICU and you think the officer did the right thing that it will teach her a lesson.. the only lesson that will be imbedded in this girls head will be that she will never be able to trust an officer. This officer should be relieved from duty permanently.

One incident I will bring up here.. somewhat related.

About 3 weeks ago there was this teen (16) that got home 30 minutes late from going to a prom. Mother was upset waiting for her to come in because her boyfriend (state trooper) was waiting so that they can go out. As soon as the daughter came home the mom opened the door and beat the living daylight out of her and the boyfriend was watching (state trooper) knocked her out and was still beating her up. This girl was so banged up her eye was shut busted lips torn hair she has green bruises till this date. After she woke up from the beating she called her real father cause her mother left her home alone then they called the cops and did a report. The mother left to vegas the next day for a week came back a week later went to court and they justified this punishment as corporal punishment!! This lady didn’t even spend a night in jail! This is severe punishment, there was a complaint submitted to the Texas State Troopers and they relieved his permanently from duty as he didn’t do anything to stop the violence being a peace officer. If you say that this treatment is wrong then you all are blind! I can’t think of any reason to beat a child half to death. If you can’t stand kids don’t have them.

I pray for the mother, the daughter and the officer. This is just the beginning.

I really hope that they go after the pedophiles who were receiving the pictures.

The tazer seems to be a weapon that can possibly do serious damage. What if it hits your child’s eye? This weapon is in league with a gun. Now, when should a gun be used. On senior citizens and children? I don’t think so. If an overweight cop can’t catch the kids then call in the helicopter and spend a few bucks because after all, these kids are should be treated like the murderers and rapists, right?

232. This officer should be fired and the young lady and parent should sue the cop and department until they are broke.

No one is above the law and that includes the cop. There is nothing in this sory stating the young girl harm or tried to harm anyone.

Many young people are stupid and disobedient; caused mainly by bad parenting. This does not mean a Cop should kick her in the face (so to speak) He should have backed off and learn how to speak to dumb people in ways that will calm them down. What if she ran into a car and killed herself? Perhaps he would laugh himself to sickness.

Enough of this over the top Police brutality. They only know what hurts when they are the ones affected. No all Cops are bad and many are very smart; would not pull a gun on an unharmed person but knows exactly how to talk to the person and get calm results.

Yes, I know many Cops and have met many who would have made a completely different action that would have resolced this situation much better.

Power begets greed and cause sickness to Cops who are dirty and think they are the almighty. Send this stupid Cop to prison for attempted murder! That will teach him a lesson.

The cop was not in any danger onr was the child in danger so there was no reason for the police chief to use the force he did. This teenager could have died. There are better ways to help people and to stop people who run unarmed from the police. The mom should have never went to the police over something so simple. I think the mom would have been better off just whipping her child and taken her cell phone from her. As far as the police go he should get the death penalty for his stupidity and maybe some of you who think the child should have been tased. These are are children and our future. We need to all raise our children togather and give them positive thing to do and that way they don’t need to entertain them selve with bad things.

235. In the Phoenix area, a home invasion took place and the criminal was confronted by the home owner. The owner told his wife to go to the neighbors and call for help, which she did. Multiple officers arrived being fully aware that the home owner had the suspect at gunpoint. One officer shot the homeowner multiple times.

Fact 1. The home owner had every right to use lethal force but chose to be merciful to the criminal (something he now regrets)

Fact 2. The home owner thought first and foremost for the safety of his wife (an honorable thing for a man to do) when he told her to leave the house. They had a phone, he just didn’t want her anywhere near the scene just in case things went bad.

Fact 3. Multiple officers showed up but only one fired on the homeowner. Conclusion: The other officers did not find a comelling reason to shoot him

Fact 4. You’d expect some apology is due here after all he was shot multiple times and by the grace of GOD he is still alive.

Fact 4. The police have accused the home owner for being in the wrong for having an “aggressive posture” when they arrived. ( I didn’t realize he was supposed to be in a submissive possition, on the ground, on his back with his legs spread when holding someone at gun point)

Fact 5. Police departments will never alnowledge wrong doing and will always find some reason to justify violence.

I was raised with spanking, smacked in the mouth for back talking my parents, etc.. If social service would stay out of correcting your child, we as parents could do more. YES, there is child abuse, I was one of the those kids, but we have to stand up to our children, and show them that we mean what we say. I do not hit my kids, not saying that I haven’t popped them in the mouth for being disrespectfull, but my kids know (I mean what I say.)
The mother did what she needed to do to get help with her child, but the police officer should be punished for that supid move.
To all parents, do what it takes to keep your children safe and under control. It will all pay off.

240. If a police officer tells you to stop, you stop. It’s really very simple. Now this young lady knows the law. Remember ignorance of the law is no excuse. Regardless of any other circumstance she should have stopped when told to do so by an officer of the law. Some people can learn by being told and some have to learn the hard way. This young lady obviously has the learn things the hard way. No matter how many people cry foul, she broke the law by not stopping when told to do so by the officer. Bet she won’t do that again.

242. well i have read most of the comments left on this story and i agree that the use of tazers by police officers has reached a point of extreme. the weapon was developed and introduced as a non-lethal deterent. if the officer is not a situation that will cause bodily harm to himself or others in the vacinity then he should be able to deal with that situation rather than to pull a weapon, non-lethal or otherwise. with that said i would put to you that this is a case of a child raised on timeouts and please express your opinion dear, so instead of “paying the price” for her misbehaving and acting out by her parents she has to get that life leason from someone she more than likely dont know. a lot of people here stated the mom should be held responsible for the girls actions but if she had so much as slapped her hand she would have been put in jail for child abuse. this is where our society has gone wrong. and the proof is in that list of young murderers that was listed here. i will close by saying this,if a cop will taz a 76 year old woman that could by no means run from him you better believe that cop will have to catch me.

243. It is easy to back in the comfort of your home or office and read about things that police officers have done then take you time to formulate a better solution to the incident.

Until you have been walked in their shoes and have made split second decisions, sometimes involving life or death, you should not judge them.

This reminds of the cop that attempted a traffic stop on a young teenager. When the car refused to stop the officer broke off the chase and let the vehicle go.

Just a few miles down the road the same teenager shot and killed a store clerk, a young woman with two small children. You see the reason the teenager refused to stop for the police was because he had already robbed several other stores. This information was not available to the officer at the time of the attempted stop.

When a police officer has to make the decision to use a weapon they sometimes have less than a few seconds to do so. You have all day to formulate your opinion.

The officer that let the vehicle go was unable to cope with the death of the young mother and he took his own life.

244. For all of you armchair quarterbacks. I’m a former Police Chief (in LE for over 29 years) and TASER Instructor. When the Chief arrived back at the station to contact the mother, she had been assaulted by the 14 year old dear that you’re all espousing your varying degrees of support for, evidenced by a bloody mouth. In my estimation, that indicates the propensity to commit violence…already established…by the 14YO, not the Chief. The initial story is not clear as to whether the child was detained as a juvenile suspect, or simply talking with Momma, which would also lend credence to the Chief’s action(s) to stop for the public good. For those of you crying foul…I’ve met some 14 year olds (both in stature and temperment) that I didn’t want to have to fight either….but the responsibilities of the moment dictated containment of the little darlings…so I did what I had to. While rhetoric is always the best option to deploy(when possible)…that requires reason on both sides of those sending and receiving thought…it’s obvious that the 14 year old dear wasn’t in the mood to talk. The M26 and X26 are designed to be deployed at no farther than 21 feet….and as an electromuscular disruption weapon, only to be deployed to the torso of an aggressive suspect when possible. Now I’m not a rocket scientist, but it’s difficult at best to hit man sized stationary targets, with the accuracy to insure the weapon functions correctly, let alone a fleeing 14 year old (when by the Chief’s own admission, he was running “full out” with her)… The deployment of the prongs and the angle with which they seperate after deployment, are not an exact science, but the shot to the skull obviously occured based on the 14 year olds movement (her choice), not the Cheif’s poor choice of less lethal option. I don’t think I’d have done the same thing given the totality of circumstances….however, I wasn’t there, nor was I in the Chief’s shoes when he reacted to the 14 year old’s poor choices…(i.e., failing to obey the lawful commands of an officer, failing to consider how her actions affected the motorists adjacent to the scene, how her assault on her mother was considered by LE authorities, etc. Sue the Chief? Good luck….Not because he’s a good ole boy…but because his actions are mostly sound. The TASER is the best non-lethal option available to LE today for “resistant” offenders. It doesn’t break bones, and rarely are hospital trips involved. This one’s on the 14 year old darlins’ choices….

245. This situation had many problems from the get-go. To the parents, I am sure you are paying for the Cell Phone, turn it off. Problem solved. To the teenager, don’t be a 14-year old know it all (Which all teenagers are anyways, just some have respect and others don’t) have a little respect and… problem solved. To the Chief of Police, Duh, A Taser for walking away from you, after chasing her in a patrol car. Taser’s are used as intermediate weapons for officer and or third person defense. Next time, before you buy a new and cool police toy, read the instructions first. Most State Attorney Offices and or Municipal Insurance providers will give you a pretty handy Model Policy to adapt for your use in the Department. Then train with the Taser, while a little expensive, well worth it.

Now, for those of you who stereo-type ALL Police as fat, overweight, and out of shape, while there are some of those, I will admit it, that is the officers fault for not taking personal pride in their health and not knowing that they may have to confront that crazed, methed up, suicidal freak and will have to fight for their life one day. I for one am 41 years old and can probably out-run, out-lift, and out fight most 20 year olds out there. But enough of that.

Again, if the 14 year old girl wants to run away or walk away… send the parents after her. A taser wouldn’t have even crossed my mind regarding this issue. The parents have the problem with the teenager, I have a bigger issue with the older guys she was sending the texts to… they need to be brought in. This whole incident was a waste of time and manpower and one more tarnish for the badge.

246. Dave,

Good reading.. I have to agree on your strong points that the taser is not the most accurate weapon/device, that being said is like shooting a gun that doesn’t shoot well you are taking KNOWN risks, and it is excessive not matter how you look at it.. i am sure that if the Chief would have used his experience as a measure as opposed to his lack of fitness then we wouldn’t have this conversation. So yeah the Girl was wrong from running and nobody is saying otherwise, BUT the chief took it way out of proportion with his methods.

250. It’s so sad when people actually believe what this police officer did is ok. I assure you it is not. So the people that are siding with the cop, you think a 14 year old girl that gets shot in the head and gets stitched up deserves it because she was acting erratic??? Do a search on what its like to be tazed, there are videos that actually show police officers testing it on each other, it is without a doubt the most misconvcieved and painful device ever invented and yes you can be tazed to death which police officers have done in the past on their suspects. She wasn’t even hostile, she posed no danger to the officer, he is putting himself in danger by trying to capture her. However that doesn’t mean you set aside basic human ethics just to get your job done. This was all because of an arugment with the daughter and her mother, and the daughter ran because she didn’t want to deal with the situation. Why is it illegal to discipline your child with a simple smack to the face? Because it is wrong… so what do we do? We hand over our personal freedom and power to law enforcement, and let them do what THEY think is right. So if you’re somebody that doesn’t mind being told how to think, or how to live, or how even how to “discipline” your own children, then keep doing what you’re doing and let the goverment, and so called “police” make that dicision for you, but please do everyone a favor and get off this fourm. This country can do without people that can’t see simple right and wrong…

Maybe the parents should take a step back and see just why they were there, not because the police asked them there, because they could not control their unruly brat…… they will likely get a big check from all of this… taze mom and dad after they sue the police department…..

EVERYONE has choices and EVERYONE should be taught from birth that there are consequences to the choices you make. Why blame the person that was innocently roped into the situation between a Woman (I don’t use the word MOTHER here on purpose) and her daughter. We live in a DEMOCRACY which means that you have the RIGHT to act as you want, however, you also have a DUTY to respect the rights of others and obey the law! Why is it that no one is BLAMING the Woman and her child who are the ONLY ONES responsible for their actions and the consequences which occurred. I was not there – and I can read between the lines of this story and distinguish whether or not the Police Officer acted to PROTECT this child from her own stupidity, i.e. running aimlessly through TRAFFIC but I certainly don’t blame the Officer for doing what SEEMED APPROPRIATE at the time! You’d be screaming if this child had been run over — and that too, you would not doubt been blamed on the Officer who was chasing her!

272. Police Chief Hatcher used bad judgement. He himself should be arrested and incarcerated for assault with a deadly weapon!

As a freelance news correspondent formerly based in Tucumcari, I have some insight to offer on this crime. The Tucumcari Police Dept has taken it’s share of lumps over the years, and with good reason; shoddy conduct by it’s officers, both on-duty and off, as well as a systemic pattern of selective enforcement of the law. The findings of a consulting firm hired by the Tucumcari City Commison several years ago gave testimony to a pattern within the city PD of poor training, as well as a host of other problems. So, news of the police chief’s abuse of authority did not surprise me.

Over the years, the charm of what was once a shimmering jewel along old Highway 66, has been tarnished by the toxic resin of the drug-trafficking trade, which has claimed more than one Tucumcari public trustee– a military fraternity commander, a city manager and a school teacher, to mention a few.

In the wake of Tucumcari’s collapse, one can find now only the run-down, boarded up cluster of structures, wobbling in decay, where a vibrant tourist economy once flourished. Needless to say, municipal sales tax revenues are drying up. Perhaps Tucumcari can no longer afford to subsidize the calibre of training that it’s police officers and citizens so desperately need. But, the reality of hollow city coffers serves as a poor excuse for Hatcher’s behavior, and will do little to restore this young victim’s confidence in law enforcement.

There you go again…there is NOTHING in this article that indicates that this girl is “invald” – which I assume you meant invalid – meaning that she is now too weak or sick to take care of herself. She got EIGHT staples in her scalp – EIGHT, and staples rather than stitches because the thin character of the skin on the scalp is better suited to staple rather than stitch repair. AND….the STAPLES were no doubt the result of the physician EXAMINING to dart penetration — not from the DART itself! I have NEVER read a single accounting of any person receiving medical attention from Tazer use, except for coronary (heart) distress. Maybe she cut her head when she fell down, after being TAZED–and what did she expect to happen when she ran and ignored the Officer’s pleas to STOP and warnings that he had a TAZER. SHE CAUSED this to happen – first by her actions with the cell phone, then by running off, and further by refusing to obey the order of a police officer. If she was MY CHILD – and I am a 54 year old Grandmother – number 1 – I would not go to the Police Station for help to control my child and number 2 – I would certainly not BLAME the person I ASKED to handle the situation for me!

290. I read the story-multiple times. There is also NOTHING in the article that states that the piercing of the skull and touching of her brain caused ANY PERMANENT DAMAGE – the dart certainly DID NOT cut her skin open – the doctor did and furthermore – since when do you cut open a wound without first doing x-rays or more likely a CAT scan or an MRI? The simple fact that an electode “touched” the brain DOES NOT infer that any DAMAGE was done! I don’t see ANYTHING in this article that implies that this girl has suffered any injury more serious than a simple open wound! She could have skinned her knee and been just as INJURED as she may be from this dart! Would you be screaming about her skinned knee – probably! Got to be worth a couple of million in a law suit – right?

1. She is a minor not doing what she was told and yes you can be arrested for that.

2. She ran from a cop.

3. The Cop told her to stop and didnt so he used his taser to stop her.

He did nothing wrong i’m sick of reading that OMG she 14 who Fing care 14 or not she didnt obey a cop end of story would i feel bad for a person thats 35 and did the same thing? No you wouldnt. Also anyone that knows taser there is 2 darts for most and that the darts spread when they eject. which means if she moved or dunked it could have hit her is the leg and head at the same time. People get your info before judging this cop.

293. Gill Harmon the injury caused brain damage, the dart broke the skin and fractured her skull. The doctors pieced her skull back together. Hence the staples oh yea and the doctors report. The innocent child ran from an armed officer who pulled a laser gun from his holster. Which happens to resemble a real gun. Poor parenting is most likely the issue here. If you had some sense you would of known she has trouble with balance and climbing stairs or the fact that she already suffered from epilepsy. The officer is on “administrative leave”.

296. AMEN, Chuck. The bottom line, PARENTS control your kids so somebody else doesn’t have to. The officer reacted. Was it right, maybe not, but maybe he has prevented her from becoming a bigger criminal. The child needed to be put under control and obviously the parents were not capable of doing it. Like it was said above, if you can’t handle them, don’t have them. I know several police officers, would I call them to help me control my child? NO, I control my children. Am I afraid of the police? No, because I abid by the law. If they were to tell me to stop, I would STOP.

Cops think so too, so don’t give them a reason to taze YOU. Blame falls on…………. The kid and parents!!!!! Ding Ding Ding!!!!

299. Well- if you gathered that information for the article – that she had a FRACTURED skull, you are a better reader than I. In addition, I was UNAWARE that physician are able to piece back together fractured skulls! Where did this maraculous surgeon get the pieces from? Did the Officer or the Paramedic pick them up and cart them to the ER??? I did not read that! Where does it state that this girl suffers from epilepsy or vertigo…but what does any prior illness have to due with the TAZER incident. The Tazer did not make her epileptic, nor cause her vertigo and last time I checked – neither of these illnesses causes you to engage in potentially dangerous activities like spreading around indecent pictures or failing to stop for a Police Officer after being duly warned. Blame the Police Officer for scaring her? I think not….it is not like she was taking a stroll in the park and suddenly this big, mean officer was chasing her. She was taken to the Police Station by her mother and the Police officer was SUMMONED by her mother for assistance.

Being placed on “Administrative Leave” is not a banner of GUILTY nor a condemnation of wrongful action by the Police Department. “Administrative Leave” is normal in situations where the actions of a Police Officer fall within specific criteria. It protects the Police Officer, the Department, and the public, until a proper investigation and evaluation can take place.

Just because her daughter was texting, and sending photos of herself? Mrs. Akin this is where you as a parent need to step up and discipline your child do not rely on the police to raise your children. The police are here to protect the people within the community from violent situations and enforce laws, not raise and discipline your children just because he or she will not listen to you, or just because they are throwing a temper tantrum.

If the Mother was so stupid as to think she would “scare” her daughter by going to the cops… she only made her situation worse. 315. PEOPLE READ THE ARTICLE! In most state domestic violence (Violence between family members related by blood, or marriage) is a Mandatory arrest! The mother brought her to the police department after they had a fight. The mother was bleeding and had cuts (it was in the article I read.) The 14 year old (not a little girl) Ran from the police station. She later ran from an office at a park. Tasers are aimed with a laser sight and at the center of the chest area at a reasonable range the darts will land within a few inches of one another. The spread of the darts in this case tells me he was a good distance away from her. One hit her in the hip and one in the head (again, this was in the article) Once she ran toward the street he had limited options. She wasn‘t responding to his commands, upset and out of control, heading for traffic. These thing are promoted and sold the police and to the public as being less-lethal weapons. This is the first I have heard of a dart penetrating bone. The question should be “was the device defective?” The situation unfolded fast, it sounds like a lot was happening and he had limited options to bring her to a stop, or he could let her go and hope she would dodge traffic, but if she hadn’t you would be blaming him for that too. They brought this to the police. The police didn’t come to them, but once the police were involved they likely didn’t have a lot of choices.
Read the article before arm chair quaterbacking.

Why anyone in their right mind would want to be a police officer today is beyond me? You basically have a target on your chest for lawsuits and bad and evil people’s intent to harm with the barrel of a gun. This is a complicated issue requiring complex answers. True, many police officers have that good ol’ boy mentality and many do lie in front of a judge although this is never addressed in public. A good lawyer can pick the testimony of a policeman apart with surgival precision. The police are a necessary evil in today’s society.

318. Bigsam;
Good read there brother. You know I have never been tasered, want to know my secret? When a Cop tells me to stop. I stop. If he/she tells me to stand still, I stand still. If there is a problem, we will work it out in a nonviolent manner. He/she will ask me questions and I will answer. The sooner I give them cooperation, the sooner they can get on looking for the bad guy and I can be on my way. When I was a kid, if a cop stopped me for anything, I had better be in the right or he would take me home to my Dad. That alone was enough for me to stay out of trouble. I see how some of these kids today talk to their parents and all I can do is gasp. I would have been picking up teeth for a week. NEVER did I backtalk my parents and just by the fact that I am still alive, you must know that I for sure did not threaten them.
As for this 14 year old and the exaggerated tale of her bodily harm, a Taser will not fracture the skull, I know, I have sold them to Police Departments. The darts are barbed and the hospital must make a small incision to release them, so much for the cuts. The staples are used to close minor incisions where a butterfly bandage will not hold, like in your hairline.
Taser darts are are not bullets. They do not have the range or accuracy of a bullet and are therefore just shot in the general area of the central body. If the person being shot at, is flailing around or ducking, they may hit the head. No one would aif for the head, the chances of making a hit are just not that good.
Maybe weshould just issue the parents of teens tasers and let them have at it for a while. After a couple of stuns and dart removals, maybe the out of control teens would get the idea.

Comment by William — July 21, 2009 @ 8:01 pm

319. We all agree that today’s teenagers (some) have much to learn about respecting authority. That said, this is Tucumcari NM, not West L.A., and it was a 14-year-old girl who had not committed a crime.

Tasers are a “last resort” weapon, for either self-defense or for submission. The only way this girl should have been tased is if she was armed and the officer believed himself to bein danger, or that others, including the girl, were endangered.

Tucumcari is a small town. This girl could have easily been apprehended at home once she had returned. Apprehended for what, by the way?

He messed up, pure and simple. We can armchair quarterback this all day and night, but the bottom line is that he overreacted. Was she wrong to run, or wrong to not stop? Certainly. But running from someone out of fear does not warrant the excessive force used to stop her. She wasn’t fighting him, she wasn’t resisting arrest, she wasn’t physically a threat in any way. Again, she should have been apprehended later for whatever reason she was being pursued. Stupid. He’s gonna get sued from here to Santa Rosa, and deservedly so.

Comment by Alan — July 21, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

320. I am going to straddle the fence here and say this; nobody I don’t care who they are deserves a taser to the head. We can say all we want to; that today’s youth are out of control and becasue of thier poor judgement that anybody and everbody deserves what they get (The old proverb of you make your bed. You lie in it.), but this girl received over/between 15 staples and stitches in her head. The dart went into her brain. Now can we say that her behavior can be called into question. I think we can all say “yes”. But; did her behavior deserve a taser to the head and bear in mind that any force that penetrates the skull and goes into the brain can cause death or some kind of serious damage. So now I ask did her behavior deserve a taser to the head and I think if your truly honest with yourself you would have to say “no”.

Police are trained to know where thier pointing thier weapons and the amount of force they can use to subdue a person, which is why when a person is getting into thier car they tell them to put thier head down. What I would like to know is why wasn’t she shot in the leg, arm even the back or chest. A head shot in any case is to ensure that you put that person down and keep him/her down.

In regards to the bad vibes for the police, on any given day we all can act like knuckleheads and do something that deserves their involvement and we get mad when we get caught.

The police chiefs story is that the girl ran away from her parent and the police and was on her way to running out and into oncoming traffic, which could of hurt her worse or even could of killed her. Do I want to appauld the quick thinking of the police (if that is his story). No not really becasue I really feel that some form of abuse has been done in this case and on the flip side even though the police chiefs behavior should be questioned he may have saved her life in some form or fashion.

321. That was absolutelyl uncalled for. This is a 14 year old child. This is not an over powered person or someone who was imposing threat unto the officer, which to my understanding is the only time they should be using them. I also went to a training on taser and the one thing they teach is where to shoot If that officer had a reason to use it, which I do not feel he did, he should have atleast been aiming at her arm leg, etc, NOT HER HEAD. This child was not a threat to that officer or to others which is the only reason at that moment he should have pulled that taser. He should definitely pay for his actions which were not warranted at all. In no way was there a threat to that officer or to the community by that 14 year old child running off and therefore the only action from that officer should have been to call other officers in to go look for her. I think he was just on a power trip and mad that she was not following his commads. I really hope that the people investigating this do what is right because that taser should not have ben used in ths case and I really hope that the family goes to the highest level posible, even if that includes involving the president, govenor, senators, etc… as that taser was used inappropriately in that case and that officer knows it as well as his officers.

Guess she wasn’t allowed to do this due to the laws created by people with nothing to do but stick there noses in other peoples business and tell them how they should raise their children. Most of which have no children. Kids today have no respect for anyone. A trate long lost which I see to only worsen. Kids need to start appreciating all the hard work being done by the parents for all the nice things they provide them with. Take them all away and give them work to do and books to read for a while I say.

326. Ok so did anyone read the article here first the girls parents took her to the Station for help. When the help came out the girl ran across a busy intersection without looking. so now she is a danger to herself and others safety. And if you look at the guideline for cops they are to stop dangers like that at all cost for they can hurt bystanders. What if she had done that at the next street and got hit then the cop would be in trouble for that too. Has anyone seen the way a teaser fires? it has multiple projectiles for a reason they are to stop a pursuit. More projectiles mean more of a chance to hit. They spread out for a cover area. Do I think this cop did right I do for he stopped a threat to other people there in the area. for if she had got hit by a car then the driver would be at fault for he hit her and did not have the car under his control at all times and god forbid the girl die if hit then it is man slaughter and the driver is a felon for the rest of there life. So now with that in mind. I think the cop did his job the best way he had to do it. Did he try and hurt the girl I doubt it.

330. 32.Light her up. She’s a delinquent with no respect and parent’s with no spine. You don’t haul your kid to the local PD and for help, then get upset with them when they try to do their job. The kid bolted. She was a fugitive, plain and simple. She was given ample opportunity by the officer to stop and comply. She chose not to do so. What lesson are we trying to send here? It’s ok to disrespect your parents, the law, and anyone else you choose, because in the end, when you’re held repsonsible for your actions, you can whine and bitch your way out of it? Great message to be sending. I have a daughter. A productive, respectful, pleasant young lady, whom I am proud of. She was headed down the path of so many other ‘hard’ teens when everything finally came to a head. She ended up face down, in my own living room, in handcuffs, and hauled off to jail. She was 16. She was defiant, sneaky, lieing, stealing, skipping school, “tough enough” to handle herself. She had no respect. She also expected me to post bail the next day. I was called to come get her and take her home and I refused. She had the attitude that she’d spend a night in juvie and be “HARD” when she got out. After several hours with the DA, we, yes, WE had her charged. Yes, it was a bullshit charge, but it got her out of harm’s way, something, as hard as it is to admit, I was not able to do. She was “hard” in front of the judge. The judge was having none of it, and off she went. Back to jail to wait for transport to a youth facility 100 miles from home. After sitting in the can for 13 days with some real hardcases, she was thinking that living in a house with her cat and a father who loved her, even though he had rules, was not so bad. After spending 3 months in a group home, barrack style bunking, military like schedules, NO privacy, 15 minute nightly phone calls, 2 hour a week visitation with family, merit/de-merit points, all the things teenager’s HATE, she was able to come home. She has also been a model citizen. Not because I forced her into it or “tough loved her”, but because she was allowed to make her choices, and was held responsible for those choices. Point of this rambling comment, the kid’s headed for a life of whining and ducking personal responsibility. Had she respected herself, she wouldn’t have been sending pictures to older men. Had she respected her mother, they wouldn’t have gone to the station. Had she respected the officer, she wouldn’t have had to ride the lightning. You can not tell me this is an isolated incident. Perhaps this will serve as a remove your noggin from your rectum moment.

331. There’s a lot of assumptions floating around here.

First, I want to address the people who are calling the Chief weak and lazy for not being able to catch and subdue a 14yo girl. I am not a girl, nor am I 14, but when I was 14, I could run a mile in 5mins flat, and I know of many girls (especially now) that are quite formidable in a fight. I’m not saying she can do either, or that the Chief is/was not lazy (he certainly is a larger man), but you shouldn’t just assume. Also, I’ve seen some pretty round guys haul some major ass, so don’t assume he was slow.

Next, to the all the people who say that he had no right, she didn’t do anything wrong, blah, blah, blah – well first, as some people have said, in some states (many in fact) failure to yield to an officer is a crime in itself and it doesn’t matter how old you are. Secondly, she assaulted her mother and assault is assault no matter how old you are.

Now, to all who are saying “he should have just let her run to the park!” The girl was not running TO the park, she was running FROM the park. To where? we don’t know, but we know she ran across the streets (which is also illegal though minor). So perhaps the Chief was attempting to protect her and others from her actions.

Is the use of the Taser acceptable? MAYBE. There were probably better ways to handle the situation, but unless you know ALL of the circumstances, you will never know.

To those who say she deserved it….nobody deserves to be injured that badly for something relatively minor.

To those who say it’s the parent’s fault….it partially is. I believe children are a product of their environment, so through either lack of or bad parenting, the girl had so little respect for authority that she would attack her own mother AND disobey an officer. Also, seeing as she brought her daughter to a police station for apparently no good reason, since she didn’t want legal action taken, I would have to say she’s a rather poor parent.

To those who say the chief should be fired – I think he should take some responsibility. Perhaps a mandatory TASER training class. But he does not deserve to be fired if he was truly attempting to protect the girl and others from her actions. Perhaps a suspension for not following proper protocol (if he did not). As many people have stated, his intent was probably not to harm the girl or hit her in the head, seeing as one dart landed in her hip, he was probably aiming for the body (which is proper usage). Additionally, I think the city should pay for the medical bills.

More of a concern for me, as someone else stated is perhaps “was the equipment defective?” judging from the dart spread, the Chief had to have been a good distance away. I have been hit by one of these (voluntarily) and from close enough to have the darts land only a foot apart, and they barely pierced my skin. To have breached the skull sounds suspect.

There are my two cents, trying to piece the FACTS together and counter what appears to be some blatant hatred of officers in general.

Bottom line, is we don’t know all of the details of what happened, and we never truly will. People generally say what makes them sound better in the public eye, even if it’s unintentional and will believe it eventually. It’s psychology.

332. Her mother did not parent her, she was giving up and utilizing the police to parent her child. She has no right to complain at how they did it. I would venture that the majority of the opinions come from folks that do not have children of their own. Having three, of which one is currently going through that stage of 12 to 15 years of age, a tazer is not actually a bad idea, and I wish that they were more affordable. I’m not sure why the Chief decided that the head was an appropriate target, but he must have had his reasons. I had thought that body mass was the preferred target for darting. Then again, after facing my daughter when she is most vocal it is easy to consider their mouths the body mass. Now that she relinquished her right to parent and took her daughter to the police instead of an appropriate psych facillity, she wants to consider litigation for how they did it. Classic.

335. I’m not saying that the girl made the right choises but the officer SURE DID NOT. I lived in Tucumcari for 15 years and have been away for 6 years and let me share something……the police (city and state) there need to be investigated by an outside company. The police sure like to harass kids (and other small time things)in that town, but the really bad things and bigger crimes that happen seem as though nothing is done! I know that teens can be big pains (I have 2 teens and a bunch of nieces and nephews so sure do know how it is). I also know that teens commit crimes but most of the police in Tucumcari think they are above the law and have controll issues, and if you or one of your family members get on their bad side and there is hell to pay for all. Something sure needs to be done about this…………..

340. No Choice — Kudos to you for handling your daughter.

To all the freakin’ liberal bleeding hearts out there, pull your heads out of your asses and grow a spine and purchase some logic and reason.

I’ve seen many comments from ‘those types’ that whining about the cop tasing the girl. That he was lazy and couldn’t keep up with her so resorted to using the taser. First off, when a cop says, “Stop/freeze!” that’s a warning order. There’s a verbal contract with the officer at that point. You have a choice. Comply and all will generally be resolved with little harm to anyone. Fail to comply and you are _CHOOSING_ to accept the ramifications and ill the befalls you. She chose the latter and, I’m pleased as punch about this, got punished for it. The cop should be commended for having the guts to do his job.

If we explore various other outcomes here, what if he had not tased her? How do you believe things would have gone down were she, as someone else noted, were to have been hit by a vehicle, fallen off of, or run into, some park structure? One of the easiest ways to subdue someone that’s running from you is getting close enough to push them forward. Most can’t cope with that and end up falling down. In either case you are the same pathetic types that would, then, scream, “LAWSUIT”, because the office failed to keep her out of harms way. And here we have the root cause of most of our current issues.

Most parents/individuals with common sense understand that being buddies with a child and timeouts/stern-talking-tos don’t always, or generally, work. There are times when a child needs to be reminded of right and wrong, acceptable/unacceptable, whether they are wanting to receive the knowledge or not.

This does not mean beating them such that a trip to the hospital is necessary. This does not mean various tortures. But it does mean that spanking, grounding, and more ass beating if the punishment is ignored are not and should not be considered abuse. We have laws, mostly, to correct behavior we do not wish for in society. Walking up to someone and punching them in the face has consequences. Same as killing someone; unless you’re OJ–but that’s an entirely different conversation. The state can enforce these laws because “the state” has a very big “weapon”. By the same token there are household laws that are and should be set up to reward acceptable and punish unacceptable behavior. The problem is that clueless bleeding heart asshats like you pushed and pushed your own bankrupt moral agenda on society and made every common-sense parent feel like they’re on the hairy precipice of serving jailtime everytime they spank their child.

It is you people I want tased every time a child acts up or does something this stupid. Parents have very little ’safe’ ways to enforce household laws. The “state” holds us responsible for everything our children do in the ‘world’ until they are of age and yet takes all of our ability to curb such behavior away. For instance if my daughter were to run out and start vandalizing random property I would be financially responsible for it. And rightly so, under reasonable conditions that I be allowed to distribute appropriate punishment upon my daughter for violating such common-sense household laws.

The upshot with this tasing incident is that perhaps this girl will now understand that when a cop tells you to stop, you stop. And if she doesn’t remember, or is just that stupid, it is my hope that whatever fine law enforcement officer is having to deal with her will have spine enough to tase her again. And on and on, until she _does_ learn.

342. I’m kind of at a loss…what was the crime she committed again?

Based on the story, the best would be jaywalking, but considering she got accross fine and considering that her injuries occured at the hands of law enforcement, then yeah, I have a problem with that.

Personally I think its moronic to even argue with a child regarding a cell phone let alone try to get the police involved and waste their time…..pretty much like calling 911 because someone gave you 5 nuggets instead of 6 at McDonalds.

What’s more disturbing is the comments I’ve been reading that say it’s OK and reasonable to do so.

Ironically the only danger to the kid was the police who, if you go by the motto “protect and serve” gave a HUGE disservice to law enforcement in general.

The [tampa millionaire] comment above and all those justifying this officer are disgraceful Americans,, its just that simple.
and adult hired by the people serving the people should not have done that to any one much much lsss a CHILD!!!

i do not need to find some fault with the child that can be addressed but first, the child was not some criminal, or harming anyone she is free to run as she pleases without worrying that some trigger happy lazy ass cop is going to shoot her in the back, and the mother to allow this is amazing, apparently 2 adult that don’t have the ability to deal with others.
the situation was not handled with the minor best interest in mind but rather a disregard for the safety of a minor.
so why cant parents start taisering their kids when they don’t comply and why is it ok for cops? oooh cause the laws say so? don’t discipline with the rod just let them go and when they grow up we’ll use them for hunting practice ? sure i know i sound absurd but its a shame its true.

i expect i higher level of professionalism and bravery from a cop dealing with a GIRL that’s running away… unarmed….crying…… at only 14 years of age. fire him no questions asked set an example and stop excusing the abusive behavior of civil servants that think they have power to abuse

When I was in my early 20’s my pot/XTC dealer was a cop(not undercover, just a way to make extra money). His partner had girls working as prostitutes for him. They both said all the other “boy’s in blue” knew. Some officers did similar things but most didn’t. Still isn’t knowing about a crime, and a criminal organization, and not doing something about it criminal/dereliction of duty? I know some are cops are descent, good people, but some are extremely violent, and most think they are above the law. Respect the badge? No, just the gun…

RUNNING FROM A POLICE OFFICER WHEN THEY ARE TELLING YOU TO STOP IS AGAINST THE LAW – I SAY AGAIN – IT IS AGAINST THE LAW!!! CAN YOU ALL UNDERSTAND THAT – IT’S AGAINST THE LAW!!! SO THAT IN ITSELF IS SOMETHING SHE DID WRONG!!! FACT – HAD SHE DONE WHAT SHE WAS TOLD IN THE FIRST PLACE SHE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TASERED. HAVE ANYONE OF YOU WHO ARE SO UPSET OVER THIS EVER BEEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT OR A TYPE OF WORK SUCH AS THAT? IT’S NOT AS EASY AS YOU STATE “SHE’S A CHILD OF JUST 14″ LETS NOT FORGET THAT THERE ARE MURDERERS THAT ARE YOUNGER!!! THERE ARE “CHILDREN” COMMITTING CRIMES THAT ADULTS HAVE COMMITTED. THERE ARE CHILDREN WHO HAS SHOT AT OR KILLED POLICE OFFICERS. I HAVE SEVERAL FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ARE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AS WELL AS MANY FRIENDS AND KNOW WHAT THEY GO THROUGH ON A DAILY BASIS. FUNNY HOW IT HAS BEEN DISMISSED THAT THE MOTHER TOOK THE “CHILD” TO THE POLICE STATION BECAUSE SHE NEEDED HELP WITH HER. THE REPORTER STATED THAT THE “CHILD” PHYSICALLY ABUSED HER MOTHER AGAIN “AGAINST THE LAW”!!!! WHO IS TO SAY WHAT SHE COULD HAVE DONE, THE “CHILD” THAT IS. LET US NOT FORGET THAT RECENTLY A “CHILD” SHOT HIS MOTHER TO DEATH BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WANT TO DO HIS CHORES.
TOO MANY “CHILDREN” NOW AND DAYS HAVE NO RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY THEN GET ALL HURT AND CRY UNFAIRNESS WHEN THEY ARE DEALT WITH AS AN ADULT OR SOMEONE WHO IS “BREAKING THE LAW” AGAIN – IT’S BREAKING THE LAW!!!!

351. It’s amazing how people are divided over this incident. It appears that some people have really twisted minds. Just because she did not follow the policeman’s order to stop was not a justification for the policeman to use force – she was simply disputing with her mother over a cellphone.

Maybe she is a “bad girl” but that did not seem to have come to the stage that required a policeman’s force like that.

I don’t think the argument about her being 14 is necessary. If she was 30, would you think the policeman had the right to do so over a similar demstic dispute? I don’t think he had any right to use force to ANYONE of ANY AGE under a similar situation. Shame on him.

353. Ms. Akin took her daughter to the police station seeking assistance regarding the daughter’s inappropriate use of a cellular phone. The daughter was scared. She’s 14 years old, of course she was scared, and so she ran. Keep in mind the cognitive capabilities of a 14 year old. The police officer had no reason or right to use excessive force on a 14 year old girl. She was not a fleeing felon, nor was she armed, a danger to herself or anyone else. The police officer’s actions are inexcusable and appalling. Unaware to the police officer, the minor has epilepsy and the taser dart actually punctured her skull and hit her brain. I hope Ms. Akin seeks legal counsel immediately and takes the appropriate action against the officer. Some of these responses are absolutely asinine. You want the child to “pay for her stupidity?” The officer needs to pay for his stupidity. And “cause and effect?” I hope the officer learns the effects of shooting a 14 year old in the head with a taser dart, although his cause is unclear and unjustifiable. He wanted to subdue her because she was such a threat? Unacceptable and ridiculous. I also see comments about the girl taking responsibility for her actions… she has 18 staples in her head. Let’s start with the police officer taking responsibility for his actions.

355. It could of been worse. Everyone who’s not in law enforcment is so quick to blame a police officer for something they have no idea what it’s about. They’re not the one’s who put their lives on the line everyday to make sure people who criticize them are safe. They don’t bother to look at the situation from the officer’s point of view. Why was she running? Did she have a weapon? Was she threating in any way or form? If you ask me, he made a good jugdment call. He could of shot her. But he had the presence of mind to reach for his secondary weapon. Yeah she may have been 14, but I’ve seen my share of 14 and 15 year old children in adult prison for the crimes they’ve committed. They are just as dangerous as adults. If you’re a critic maybe you should walk in the shoes of a police officer for a day or two and see what it’s like to be them. Maybe you’ll have a better understanding and appreciation for what they do for people like you. Good Job Officer. And keep up the good work.

356. I’m from New Mexico and have lived in many different parts of it. I left that state primarily because of how corrupt the police force is, and how far out of hand most of the Judicial process has become there. Ultra-left wing special interest groups have had a field day in that state. You wouldn’t know it until you’ve been through it, but it may as well be a third world country. The Hispanic machismo culture does not mix well with our idea of justice, safety, protection, due process, and most importantly, freedom.

So if you are here, even remotely considering erring on the side of the police officer, just stop. You are wrong. They need to be exposed. They need to be terminated and replaced. They need to be kept in check, constantly.

Anywhere else, I feel safer when I see a cop. New Mexico is just corrupt.

359. You know what? That little snot got what she deserved. Obviously he didn’t mean to shoot her in the head! Nobody would ever get promoted that far in an agency if they had excessive force issues. How do you know she wasn’t about to run across a busy street with traffic or was acting so estatic and irrational that the tazer was actually the safer option than the danger she was putting herself in? Listen, the fact is that cops who become certified to carry a tazer (thats right, you don’t get to just carry one without being certified) have to be tazed themselves so they know first hand what the effects are. The same goes for the OC spray they carry. A young adult has a slimmer chance of having a medical problem than an older person would from being tazed. Stop being soft. I would of tazed her too if I thought the situation warranted it. THEN I would of tazed the mother for being a bad parent. You people critisizing police because of your own bad parenting make me sick. Be accountable for your own actions and sub par parenting! Your the REAL pigs out there. The ones who are doing grave injustices to your kids by spoiling them and letting them walk all over you. You should have your children taken from you by the state for negligence. Negligence for raising a snotty, spoiled, soon to be WASTE on society. I’m sure they’ll be the ones to grow up thinking they’re entitled to everything without actually working hard for it too. A TASER round to the skull is very potentially fatal move. In that case he used possible lethal force on an unarmed minor for a misdamenor offense. You have to have serious issues if you find this to be “okay, I’d allow the same on my child.” Police officers take POST. They know how to subdue someone. It’s basic training. Thats why you get HANDCUFFS. AND MASE. AND A BRAIN. How embarissing. A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL. GIRL.

If I as just another person shot and killed a child by accident in defense of myself from a person trying to kill me..I would be put up on involintary manslaughter charges,, in the eyes of the law it wouldnt matter I was defending myself,, So to peeps that think the police are not above the law they are and have been for a long while,,Shoot first ask questions later Cops motto
I mean I can go on about things like the above,,,Columbus OHIO ran a survey on police response times a few years ago,,,average reponse time to a domestic disputed,,ie man /woman arguing,,,3min 38 sec …adverage response time to shots fired call 23 mins go figure that one:)
Now I could argue both sides of the issue here well,,but the fact of the matter is Police are the last people I would call in any emergency,,Thier as likely to shoot me as well as the bad guy if they feel thier life is in danger doesnt matter I wasnt the threat or that I was the one that called them, I just got in the way or worse yet I was the hostage and they would get away it

Goddamn it if someone runs from a cop in broad daylight (or at night for that matter). She was in no danger of being assaulted by the cop in a public park in daylight. So why did she run? She’s lucky not to have been shot with a bullet. If it were some South American country, she might just be laying in the morgue right now (for running from the cops). Lucky for this police person she is still alive. So she runs off and gets away. Do you really think this 14 year old would be gone forever? Patience, common sense and proper use of authority is what was needed in this case. Send the kid to boot camp, and retire the chief. This is not your modern day cowboys and indians. His life wasn’t threatened. Others in the area were not in danger. If he wasn’t fat, lazy, and slow then he would be able to catch her on foot and let’s hope he would then be able to subdue her using his hands. The very moment she took those pictures of herself nude, she was guilty of possessing child pornography. When she sent those same photographs to older men, she became guilty of distribution of child pornography. Last I checked, that is a serious crime in all states within the US. Maybe the use of the Tazer on her was a little excessive, maybe it was not. We do not know all the details of what transpired during the whole of the incident. We simply know what the media chose to report. All too often, the media pick and choose what information they share and paint the picture to demonize whichever individual they decide to pick on that day. This child, though, is clearly in dire need of discipline like many of today’s youth.

370. CHIEF ROGER HATCHER IS A BALL LESS PU$$Y WHO SHOT A LITTLE GIRL IN THE BACK LIKE A COWARD!!!!!!!

Comment by OUTLAW — July 22, 2009 @ 4:06 pm

371. I am also the author of comment #244. This tragedy began 14 years ago….not yesterday when the Taser was deployed by Chief Hatcher to attempt to control an “out of control” juvenile delinquent. The 14 year old’s medical status doesn’t enter into the equation under any circumstance, as police officers can only operate on known facts, not assumptions or presumptions, when they take action. Contrary to the popular opinions of the numerous bleeding heart liberals I’ve read, we don’t carry crystal balls in our pockets, nor should we have to. The law, regardless of your thoughts about it, is a social contract, designed to balance the rights of each individual citizen v. the protection of the public good. The police are the enforcement arm for that contract, which you all have established by your inability to govern yourselves without killing each other or robbing each other blind – hence the social contract. The mother of this juvenile somehow, for some unknown reason, abrogated all of her responsibility for raising her child to society (i.e., other siblings, peers, school teachers, counselors, socialization agencies, etc., ad naseum) and then deferred to the same avenue for controlling her unruly teen, 14 years later, after being assualted by her (i.e., went to the police). The countless comments of villification of the officer involved, especially by idiots like “Outlaw” are indicative of the moral decline of our cities, nation, and world, that have left us as litigious thugs, bent on accountability for everyone else but ourselves. The mother should pay increased attention here! Your 14 year old is in a hospital recovering from a Taser wound because YOU DIDN’T TEACH HER RESPECT FOR YOU OR AUTHORITY FIGURES. Most comments I’ve read are nebulous opinionated crap, designed to evoke reactions of anger, nothing more. You morons need to accept that there are consequences to actions, some of those consequences are unfortunate…but again…the 14 YO little darlin made all the choices. One last comment, if you’re not a cop…don’t comment on what we are allowed to, or should do. You’ve never walked a day in our shoes….nor have you ever taken the risks we take every day for perfect strangers. Better yet, next time you need a cop – handle it yourself!

372. Fay;
I didn’t say some teens aren’t capable of killing. Go back and read ithe post.
But I know from experinece with my son, who never did anything, but work his ass off, bought himself a brand new pick-up truck and home, had a wonderful family, owned his own construction company and was stopped by a cop, who shoved him around, called him a punk and asked him where he stole the truck. All because he had long hair. This happened more than once. That’s bull$*#@.
The cop told my son he couldn’t own the truck because he (the policeman) couldn’t afford to buy one like that, so he knew my son couldn’t. That’s profiling! Which is Bull$***… And no my son wasn’t a person of color it was his long hair.
Ya just don’t judge people by what they look like or what they wear and taze them cuz YOU think they’re worthless.
I think the parents of this child should be checked out to see if the “CHILD” is being abused. Kids will act out when crap is happening to them at home. I know this because I was abused at home. I grew up just fine and this young girl might too. If only someone would ask questions and give help instead of treating her worse.
I also said I know alot of fine Policemen whom I respect. But I also knew policemen who were jerks and thought they were “GOD”. Policemen who were dealing drugs and/or getting kickbacks from the drug dealers. I know this because my best freind was married to one of the “good police detectives” who lost his job trying to catch the bad ones.
This is what Policemen should be doing, catching the creeps, not chasing 14 year old girls and tazing them in the head, because the parents don’t know how to be parents.
BTW my husband was a reserve police officer. Enough said!!!!!!!!

375. “Outlaw,” I’m sorry son, but this isn’t about “…your book…” I know your idea of manhood revolves around “being an outlaw”, “having a pair” and all the ridiculous cliches’ that are associated with the deviant behavior you embrace and call your life. I’ve read nothing but worthless spew in your comments for tha last two days, either because your too ignorant to hold a coherent adult conversation about the topic at hand without using profanity, or because your psychotic or sociopathic and you really don’t care. Either way It really doesn’t matter…Your pathetic attempt to bait me is useless. Your sniveling tirades about what Chief Hatcher is or isn’t, or what you perceive me to be or don’t are irrelevant. When it’s all said and done…Chief Hatcher won’t answer to you or be shielded by me, regardless of either of our opinions of his actions…What are reasonable deductions, however, from all of your blathering is: (1) You’re well on your way to becoming one of the many recidivists that all law enforcement personnel have to deal with year in and year out, and (2) You wouldn’t make a pimple on a good cop’s ass….have a good night son.

378. Dave;
I’m just wondering, with you being a cop, why aren’t you out doing your job instead of reading this blog for the past two days? Just curious.
Also you and I both know there are good and bad cops all over this country. Is this not true?
There was absolutely another way to handle the situation other than tazing. The young lady would have gone home sooner or later. Besides I assume her Mom didn’t press charges. No charges, no reason to taze her.
I’m sorry but a child will run if they are afraid. I don’t care if she sent thousands of pictures, she was a minor and needed help not a hole put in her head by a Police Chief. That was totally uncalled for.
There are criminals out there to catch, like the lousy men who were getting the pictures of her. GROWN MEN FOR GOD’S SAKE! Those are the creeps who he should have been chasing down.

379. “Outlaw”…I really want to help you out there son….Let’s just assume for assumptions sake that anyone reading this blog really may want to take you seriously…We need to educate you in a few requirements of appropriate social interaction. To legitimately participate in “Internet Jousting,” “Verbal Judo,” “Blogging” or whatever term you may apply to your incessant profane blathering, you have to: (1) Be able to bring something of substance to the table (i.e., have some basis of knowledge about the subject matter beyond your useless opinion of what Chief Hatcher should have done). In essence, you have to have some credible knowledge of the US Constitution, Tucumcari Municipal Law, Police Departmental Procedure, Crisis Management, Use of Force, Less Lethal Weapon Options/Deployment, Force Continuum, Model Policy, Ability to immediately and correctly assess all Contributing Circumstances (based upon what he had available at the moment of decision), and/or Pertinent Alternatives. But, of course, you’ve never been a cop, and you don’t like cops, so you don’t… (2) You need to have the appropriate education to facilitate the construction of sentences that promote reasonable argument and debate, which also tend to preclude the continuing degeneration to name calling, foul cursing, and personal attack. But alas, again, you don’t, or (because I don’t want to presume that you’re not a drop-out) you’re too uncouth to take advantage of it, and correspond appropriately. (3) When you want people to take you seriously, you talk (or write) intelligently about the subject matter at hand, not make baseless threats you know well you can’t consummate, that only serve to make you appear like a neolithic fool that can only spout expletives. You see in all reality, Outlaw, on the Internet, I could be a 90 year old (well read) woman writing all of this, or a retired police chief with 29 years experience, that knows how to control his anger and his action/reaction, that has met so many “Outlaws” that I really do feel sorry for them all. The readers observing this exchange really do want to believe that you have something besides filth to contribute, but the non-stop “…F*&% this…” and “…P#$%” that…” leave people wondering “Is this an intelligent human being trying (unsuccessfully) to be heard, or just another pre-pubescent moron whose only function in life is to agitate because he can? ‘ I don’t know…. I’m not Solomon….But I await your response which I’m sure will settle the conjecture for all of us.

381. “Usetoliveinnewmexico”…I have served my country both in the military (retired Master Sergeant – Military Police) and civilian (retired Police Chief) for over 29 years. Read my comments #244 and #371. Because this is America it is my right and my prerogative to read and respond to what I want, when I want. Hope that satisfies your “curiosity.” The “smack” of the inuendo of your comments that somehow I’m lazy or have too much time on my hands were unjustified….but then again…believing that is your prerogative. There are indeed “…good and bad cops…” out there…but the few bad tarnish the supreme dedication of the many good. As to your alternative solutions for how Chief Hatcher should have acted…I’ll refer you to comment #379.

385. Too bad excessive force means pulling out the police issued firearm. Would her parents rather bury her do to a gun shot wound? No. Why is everyone so quick to blame the police? Was the police officer just supposed to let her run into traffic? If he would have done that, and not run after her, the family would be suing the city so fast for not preventing anything from happening.

387. Take the stinking taser guns away from the police. They don’t have enough sense to know when to use one.

Comment by carol crow — July 24, 2009 @ 8:48 pm

388. I can’t believe some of you people who are saying, “She got what she deserved.” and, “She should have done what she was told.” Stupid, IMHO! C’mon — there is a concept called, “appropriate response” — and, this was NOT it. That’s about as sensible as getting shot for speeding.

Too bad the cop couldn’t “control” a 14-yo girl. So what if she ran away — she wasn’t under arrest or anything. He should have just let her go and let her parents file an “incorrigible child” report on her (if they have that in NM).

The officer had it in his hands to keep the situation from getting out of control, but he chose to exert his authority, instead. It’s the, “I am the law — you must obey” mindset that usually causes these kinds of problems.

The police in this country are out of control. Their job is to PROTECT the citizens of this country — not CONTROL them at all costs. This is simply the beginnings of a police state.

389. To ALL that DEFEND Police or ANYONE else when they are WRONG.I am 69 1/2 years old and in excellent physical condition and health.I walk 11 miles 4 times a week in 2 1/2 hrs and can easily run 2 miles at steady, jogging pace.”I” could have CAUGHT that young Girl.”IF” the Chief of Police or any OTHER Police Officer cannot run down, and subdue a 14 year old CHILD their DAMN AZZZ has no BUSINESS on ANY Police Force in the FIRST place and the City Counsel should very seriously consider that. There is NOT justifiable CHEAP excuse for this BARBARIC act. There is still a thing called BACK UP used by Police. That bug Butish bstrd need to be SHOT with a taser himself.Lastly–if that Abuse of POWER COWARD cannot run down a 14 year old GIRLS what then for a VIOLENT Crminal who is ARMED? He has NO place in Law enforcement because he has PROVEN beyond DOUBT that he CANNOT apprehend DANGEROUS Criminals.Since he CANNOT apprehend a 14 year old CHILD how the damn hell do people in his jurisdiction THINK He can Protect THEM? This is LOW down and ORNERY and ALL that support this IS the SAME.A Grown MAN would kick his COWARD head IN.MANY so called POLICE are OUT of CONTROL in America the UGLY.

Comment by Budd — July 25, 2009 @ 12:35 am

390. I just have to comment that since these Tasers have been issued to Law enforcement Officers it seems that because they are considered “Non-Lethal Weapons” that they areready to use it at any situation “they” seem fit. It is a damn shame that a “Peace Keeper” is willing to use force like this against some people who clearly could be damaged physically and mentally for life because they would be cleared of any wrong doing. This is because in a court of law and scientific findings say that only a small percentage of those tested on were actually harmed by these devices. It doesn’t say that some people were severely damaged as a result of the voltage they produce. In conclusion, I find it sick that a “Chief” had to taser a teenage girl because he couldn’t actually shoot her with his pistol without getting into trouble. Instead he had a trigger finger for his taser.

Comment by Raymond Giroux — July 25, 2009 @ 1:37 am

391. What is this world coming to? A 14 year old child shot with a taser because the cop couldn’t catch her? It’s out of control! A police chief no less should have been able to subdue a teenager with out causing any kind of harm to their person isn’t that what they are trained to do? Well if you watch the news lately it seems that in some places they don’t train their officers at all, the fake or forge their training requierments. They call tasers a non lethal weapon, but the way that they seem to be using them as of late, I beleive they are going to prove to be as lethal as a gun, they are causing life altering injuries to people, some that will never fully recover from their encounters. Let me put it to you this way, I have been a law abiding citizen my whole life, and don’t plan on changing that, but this is out of control! Something needs to be done and it needs to be done soon before someone does die as a result of being tasered, believe me the way it keeps going it’s going to happen sooner or later, take the damn tasers away, and leave them to their own devices. Old school they are going to kill someone it’s neglegent operation of a firearm any way you look at it…..SMARTEN UP!

392. Dave;
I would like to say thank for your service to our country. I have great respect for the military. However I lived among Policemen and in our small town of 14,000 people in New Mexico, over half of them were released from their jobs or arrested for illegalities. I think said, “not all cops are bad cops”.
In my opinion, if we parents hadn’t had our right to control a child with a little slap to the behind, there would be better children nowadays. But that’s not a choice for my children. There are child abuse laws to keep the parents from controlling their children. That’s unfortunate. If the parents were allowed to control their children then the “good cops” could go do the jobs they were “hired” to do.
Yes they “work for us” and I have the right to ask when one is sitting commenting on a site. Sorry you felt the need to get defensive.
Let me tell you a little story about a friend of ours and their 5 year old child. He had been told by the daycare provider and a policeman who was there to teach them about “stranger danger”. They told him if anyone hit him or even scared him to call 911. His mother was a wonderful parent and had never hit that child, NEVER!
One day she asked him to pick his toys up and they would go get an ice cream. He told her no, so she sent him to his room. He sneaked into her bedroom and called 911 and told them she hit her.
The police came to arrest her and would have if they had one bruise on him. They found nothing, left the home, but before they left, they told the child if she scared him again, they wouold come back.
She did just what I would have done at that point, screamed “why did you do that”. He told her to shut up or he’d call them again. Then she did something else I would have done. She drove from ElPaso, Tx., across the New Mexico and spanked his well deserved butt. Needless to say he never called 911 ever again and he never got a spanking again either.
Parents are to blame alot for how children react these days. But the stupid law that takes our right to correct your child without being punished for child abuse keeps many, many parents from controlling them and the children know it. My Mom would have used a belt on my rear had I ever hit her or yelled at her. We knew better, but also respected her at the same time and would never have talked to her like that. Parental control also causes respect for others.
As for teaching children “respect” for policemen, is it “respect”, “fear” or “hate”. I think it’s the latter in some comunities. You can see that in alot of these posts.
A policemen should be someone you can go talk to and not one to fear. They are the ones who should have been in control of their emotions with this 14 year old.

For the people who think just because you say “yes sir” and “no sir” the policemen will respect you, not all will.
I am 61 years old and have always observed the law to a tee. I use my turn signal at every corner. I had one block to get from the right side of 3 lanes to turn left and therefore had to keep my turn signal on and was stopped by a policeman and told I didn’t use my signal and went across lanes.
Do you think I could argue with him? NO! Do you think I could tell him I did use my signal? NO! He was hellbent on giving a ticket to someone. He took my license to his car and came back with it and was mad as all get out, because I had never even had a warning.
He said “I am gonna give you a warning this time”. HE WAS IN THE WRONG. And no it’s not because I am getting “old and forgetful”.
That was 17 years ago and he’s still the same creep to other people. That’s his personality and “his God complex”. God help the ones he stops.
