Officials are considering a ban on the sale of samurai-style swords after a series of sword attacks in Britain.
The Times of London says the decorative knives are being carried by gang members to gain street credibility.
Officials say there have been at least 80 crimes, including six murders, involving samurai swords in England and Wales in the past four years, the newspaper said.
The Home Office is considering a ban on the sale, import and hire of the large, decorative swords, with violators facing up to six months in jail or a fine of more than $9,000.
Exemptions may be made for martial arts groups and collectors, the Times said. (c) UPI
