Dry Pet Food Salmonella Outbreak! IAMS, Eukanuba Recall Expands
by Jim Brogan

Pet food recall expands to include popular veterinary brands. Continued concerns over salmonella contamination have prompted Proctor and Gamble to expanded a pet food recall to include specialty dry dog foods sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands.

The dog foods have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. These brands are sold in veterinary clinics and pet retailers.

The recalled foods include all dry sizes, varieties, and UPC codes for the following brands, with "Best by" dates of 01Jul10-01Dec11:

Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The company said it has not received any reports of illnesses linked to the recalled foods.

The outbreak was blamed on salmonella bacteria found in several brands of dry dog and cat food produced at a Mars Petcare US plant in Pennsylvania, including Pedigree and Special Kitty, reports local12.com.

Various manufacturers have issued at least six pet food recalls this year because of possible salmonella contamination, data from the Food and Drug Administration shows.
