Bianca White Cold Slaying Case Reopened
by Staff

The 1994 case of the slaying of an East Cleveland, Ohio, girl, which has gone unsolved, has been reopened, police said.

Sherry White, the mother of Bianca White, 11 years old at the time she was stabbed as she sat doing homework and bled to death in the living room of the house she lived in with her parents, said she had always hoped for a renewed opportunity for justice, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Thursday.

Police came to White's home Wednesday, on the anniversary of Bianca's death, to tell her they had reopened the case, the Plain Dealer reported.

"I saw the detectives standing there and they said, 'Can we talk to you for a minute?' and I was so happy," said White.

Detective Sgt. Scott Gardner had begun looking into the case, to some extent at the urging of several retired detectives, the newspaper said.

He found evidence at the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office that had not been tested for DNA. DNA testing was new and very costly at the time, the newspaper said.

Gardner said the evidence has been sent for testing to a state lab.

He said he is also following up on information the mother provided in 1994 about phone calls from a man she knew, who is currently serving time in Ohio for rape and murder and was convicted of rape in another state.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton and Police Chief Ralph Spotts favored forming a major-crimes police unit, which has permitted detectives to reopen cold cases such as Bianca's, Gardner said.

Detectives request those with information on the case contact them at 216-681-2162. (c) UPI
