How Alcohol Raises Blood Pressure, Weight Gain: 120 Calories in a Five Ounce Glass of Red Wine
by Jack Ryan

How alcohol raises blood pressure and how alcohol can promote weight gain. There are 120 calories in a five ounce glass of red wine and 100 calories in a five ounce glass of chardonnay.

The key here is moderation. You are permitted one 5-ounce glass a day. Any more than that can raise blood pressure and put on the weight.

Wine does contain heart-healthy properties, even if researchers are not completely sure how wine works its magic. It is believed that antioxidants may keep blood vessels flexible.

Not a wine person? You can get similar benefits from one ounce of liquor or a 12oz beer a day.
