The 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente, now a faded yellow but still clean as a whistle, has finally been parked for the last time after 576,000 miles and 50 years of loving care and use.
At the time of purchase, it cost a whopping $3,300. Today? It's priceless, in terms of memories, trips and the length of time it not only existed, but ran - to grocery stores, doctor appointments, kids to school, and all the things that a trusty car is used for - and did it well.
In a radio interview, Veitch said the only person she'd sell it to is Jay Leno, an avid car collector. She actually appeared with the vehicle on an August 2010 episode of the "Tonight Show".
"Nobody can afford to take care of it like I have, adds the feisty Grandmother. Her four children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, aren't in line, she added.
All of the vehicles particulars have been documented: she has the original bill of sale, all repair slips, and boasts the air conditioning and interior are all original, except for the driver's seat bottom - it was repaired.
The world record? Irv Gordon's 1966 Volvo P1800 is scheduled to reach 3 million miles this year; he has held the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles on a noncommercial vehicle since 1998.
Here is one of many video interviews about the car.
