Jackson's Mother Named Kids' Guardian
by Staff

The mother of the late U.S. pop star Michael Jackson can be the temporary legal guardian of his three children, a judge ruled Monday.

Los Angeles County Probate Judge Mitchell Beckloff granted a request by Katherine Jackson to retain temporary custody of "Prince" Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., 12; Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson, 11; and Prince Michael Jackson II, 7, CNN reported.

Michael Jackson, 50, died Thursday at his Los Angeles home, and an autopsy performed the next day failed to determine a cause of death. CNN said an Aug. 3 hearing has been scheduled for Katherine Jackson's request to become the childrens' permanent guardian.

The Jackson family also filed a petition with the court asking that Katherine Jackson be appointed the administrator of Michael Jackson's estate and that the children be named his sole beneficiaries, the U.S. broadcaster reported.

Observers said a ruling granting permanent custody of the Jackson children to their grandparents may set up a legal battle with their mother, Debbie Rowe, who gave up her parental rights in 2001 but then obtained a court ruling stating those rights were wrongly terminated.

Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, told CNN Sunday he and his wife expected they would be allowed to keep their three grandchildren.

"We're not trying to get custody," Jackson said. "We will get custody and have custody." (c) UPI
