George Lucas Thrills Scream Awards Crowd But Batman Is The Big Winner
by Staff

Star Wars creator George Lucas provided the highlight of this year's (08) Scream Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday night (18Oct08) when he showed up to accept the Comic-Con Icon Award.

The Greek Theater was awash with the stars of film fantasy and sci-fi for the annual prizegiving, but it was Lucas' unexpected appearance which stole the show.

Flanked by two Star Wars Stormtroopers, Lucas was greeted by a standing ovation as he stepped onstage to accept his honour.

Sir Anthony Hopkins and filmmakers Tim Burton and Wes Craven also picked up special awards, but the night's big winner was Batman.

The Dark Knight claimed 12 prizes, including The Ultimate Scream honour and acting awards for co-stars Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and the late Heath Ledger.

Bale took home the Best Superhero honour, Oldman claimed Best Supporting Actor, and Ledger was named both Best Fantasy Actor and Best Villain for his portrayal of the Joker.

Director Christopher Nolan scored the Best Director trophy and the Best Screamplay, along with Jonathon Nolan and David S. Goyer.

Other big winners at the third annual Scream Awards were Iron Man and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - both films claimed two awards.

Robert Downey Jr. appeared via satellite from the set of his new Sherlock Holmes movie in London to accept his Iron Man acting honour.
