JAKARTA, June 13, 2006 (UPI) -- The Indonesian government has determined damages from the May 27 earthquake surpass $3 billion, largely due to housing losses, the Financial Times reports.

The government report is due to be released Wednesday in Jakarta to the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, but sources told the newspaper of the estimate, which is six times higher than the initial estimate.

Suprayoga Hadi, head of the assessment team at the National Development Planning Agency said the Java quake destroyed or caused heavy damage to 181,000 houses, with most of them requiring complete rebuilding.

The report said the amount is much higher than the more deadly tsunami that struck the south of Indonesia in December 2004 because the Java area was much more highly populated. In the tsunami-stricken Aceh region, 120,000 homes were destroyed.

However, 160,000 people in Indonesia were killed by the tsunami, compared with 6,000 in the earthquake, the report said.
