Utah Rock Art Vanishing

PROVO, Utah - March 24, 2006(UPI) -- Rock art created hundreds of years ago is disappearing from the Utah wilderness at an alarming rate, the Provo Daily Herald reports.

A number of factors appear to be contributing to the damage to -- and theft of -- the pictographs. They include the increased accessibility of wilderness areas, population growth in the state and even eBay, which has provided a place to sell Indian art.

"It's a real issue for us, there is a lot of vandalism and graffiti going on right now," Troy Scotter of the Utah Rock Art Association told the newspaper.

Scotter said much of the art on the west shore of Utah Lake is "not the big flashy stuff," with some on rocks small enough to be portable.

Under the Archeological Resources Protection Act, vandalizing or stealing rock art is a crime.
