Cindy Sheehan Announces She's For Hire
By Jack Ryan
Sep 28, 2005

FOX reports Cindy Sheehan told the news service CNS that she is going to begin charging for speaking engagements saying "People get paid for doing what they do."

Sheehan recently signed on with a speakers' bureau, and her appearance on the lecture circuit has drawn mixed reactions, especially from her younger supporters at the University of Maryland Tuesday night.

Sheehan reportedly left before the floor was opened to students for a question-and-answer session. Event moderator Gar Alperovitz, a professor at the university and the founder of the Democracy Collaborative, told students that Sheehan was not well. "She's in the back and very, very ill and I think also upset so she's not going to be coming back,"  according to CNSnews

Before the event, Sheehan reportedly met with reporters to discuss her plans for the future. She said she didn't think her contract with Speaking Matters LLC would distract from her message.

"I love doing this and I do it for free," Sheehan continued. "But, I have to pay my bills, too," she told Cybercast News Service.

Meeting With McCain

On Tuesday Sheehan wasn't swayed to change her opposition to the war in Iraq after meeting with one of its supporters, Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam veteran whom she allegedly called "a warmonger."

The so-called "Peace Mom" reportedly thanked McCain for meeting with her, but she came away from the meeting extremely disappointed.

"He tried to tell us what George Bush would have said," Sheehan, told reporters, according to the AP. "I don't believe he believes what he was telling me."

McCain, R-Ariz., also seemed disenchanted with the meeting, which he said had been misrepresented as including some of his constituents. Only one person in Sheehan's small delegation has ties to the state, and that person reportedly doesn't live there anymore.

The two reportedly exchanged differing views about the war, and McCain described the conversation as "a rehash" of opinions already established. He also indicated that he might not have met with Sheehan had he known none of his constituents would be in the group.

Although McCain has openly criticized the handling of the Iraq war at times, he has steadfastly supported President Bush's call to stop terrorism abroad before it reaches the U.S. shores.

Sheehan, whose son, Casey, died in Iraq last year, has keyed up the anti-war movement with her call for troops to be brought home and President Bush to justify his reasons.

"He is a warmonger, and I'm not," Sheehan said after meeting with McCain, according to the AP. "I believe this war is not keeping America safer."

"She's entitled to her opinion," McCain reportedly said. "We just have fundamental disagreements."

Busted

Sheehan's meeting with McCain was one of several she has scheduled this week as part of her campaign to convince members of Congress to explain their reasons for going to war. She spoke before a large anti-war rally Saturday on the National Mall and was arrested Monday for failure to keep moving in front of the White House.

She and about 370 others were taken to a suburban police station, fingerprinted and charged with demonstrating without a permit, an offense that carries a $50 fine.

About 2000 people, far fewer than the more than 100,000 who marched on Saturday, chanted support for Ms Sheehan and the other people who were arrested with her, according to published reports.

The "arrest me" protest had been planned and discussed with Washington area police and emails were sent to media organizations, outlining what would happen and when.
