Forbes' richest people [LIST] - Mexican telecom mogul Carlo Slim Helu is the world's richest man, Forbes magazine determined.
Slim saw his net worth swell more than $18 billion in the last year to an estimated $53.5 billion, slightly more than Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates' total of $53 billion. Gates has been on top of the Forbes list of richest people in the world for 14 of the last 16 years, including last year.
Gates' drop from first to second this year on the list was despite an increase of $13 billion in his estimated worth.
Investor Warren Buffet, No. 1 in 2008, is third with a worth of $47 billion, about $10 billion more than a year ago, Forbes said.
Indian energy company leader Mukesh Ambani ($29 billion) fell to ninth and his countryman Lakshmi Mittal ($28.7 billion), who runs a steel company, fell to sixth.
