Steven Spielberg and his wife have donated $100,000 in support of gay marriage.

The 'Saving Private Ryan' director and his spouse Kate Capshaw gave the staggering amount to help fight Californian ballot Proposition 8, which aims to take away the homosexual community's right to wed.

A statement from the couple read: "By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation.

Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

The couple are the latest celebrities to show their support for the campaign.

Last week, Brad Pitt announced he would be donating the same amount to the cause, adding: "Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8."

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres - who married her long-term girlfriend Portia de Rossi in August - has openly voiced her support for the campaign against Proposition 8.

She wrote on her blog: "There's a California Proposition on the ballot that's a little confusing. It's Proposition 8.

It's called 'The California Marriage Protection Act' - but don't let the name fool you.

It's not protecting anyone's marriage. Not yours. Not mine.

"I'm FOR gay marriage. And in order to protect that right - please VOTE NO on Proposition 8. And now that you're informed, spread the word.

I'm begging you. I can't return the wedding gifts - I love my new toaster!" (c) BANG
