Khat UK Hub? Herb Ban in Netherlands Pushes Britain to Decide
by Mitch Marconi

An herb called Khat is causing an uproar in the European Union, as chewing the leaves of the herb induces an effect similar to amphetamines (like speed) on the brain, and has an adverse effect on people's mental health, say experts.

The issue is that Khat is not outlawed in the United Kingdom, while sixteen other European Union nations including the Netherlands have banned it outright.

Fears are that the UK could become a hub for importing (or smuggling) Khat to other countries.

But most feel use of Khat is limited and not spreading to the general population, and that it will die out much like snuff did.

Khat is actually composed of the leaves and shoots of the herbal plant Catha edulis - a flowering shrub native to the Horn of Africa and Arabian peninsula. It was introduced into society primarily by Somali elder men who have consumed the herb for generations.

Go here for the full story - Read more about Khat here.

Below is an interesting documentary style video about the drug Khat.
