Spanish nurse contracts Ebola [PHOTO\VIDEO]; first outside of West Africa, A Spanish nurse has become the first person to contract Ebola outside of West Africa. Teresa Romero Ramos said she followed all protocols and does not know how she became infected with the virus.

Ramos, who helped treat two Spanish missionaries who died after returning from Africa with Ebola, tested positive for the disease on Monday.

Spanish Health Minister Ana Mato said that Ramos had been caring for Spanish priests Manuel García Viejo, who contracted the disease in Sierra Leone and died in a Madrid hospital on September 25.

"We are working in coordination to give the best care to the patient and to guarantee the safety of all citizens," Mato said.

Ramos started to feel sick last week, but wasn't admitted to the hospital until Monday. She is now in stable condition.

Officials also said Ramos had contact with 30 healthcare workers who have been placed under observation for 21 days.

The Ebola outbreak is now the largest in history. It has claimed more than 3,400 lives, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
