Nassau County officials have advised people in Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, Long Beach and Point Lookout to evacuate immediately. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said at a press the conference that the evacuation order may become mandatory soon.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said: "I think the voluntarily evacuation is the appropriate call at this time. I also want to make sure we emphasize that just because it's a voluntary evacuation doesn't mean it's not serious. This is a very serious situation and just because it's sunny out and the weather looks fine, people should not take a false confidence."
Officials in Suffolk County, however, have issued mandatory evacuations as Hurricane Irene travels towards Long Island. The evacuations are beginning at 8 A.M. Saturday morning and will impact roughly 70,000 residents who live in the lower areas of town.
Here is the list of areas being evacuated for Suffolk county: Blue Point, Patchogue, East Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, Shirley, Mastic Beach, Moriches, Center Moriches, Cedar Beach Peninsula in Mt. Sinai, and East Moriches. (c) tPC
