According to reports, the National Park Services have inspected the monument and found cracks in the stones at the top of the monument.
Fox News reported, "The NPS released a statement after completing a secondary inspection that structural engineers will evaluate the cracks Wednesday to determine the best way to repair the Monument before reopening it to the public. The Washington Monument grounds have been reopened except for an area about 100 feet outside of the plaza."
NPS says this about the Washington Monument on their website: "The Washington Monument was built between 1848 and 1884 as a tribute to George Washington's military leadership from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. Its construction took place in two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84--a lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the American Union caused the intermittent hiatus."
