White Illustration Of Michael Vick Firestorm
by Mike Baron

White Michael Vick illustration causes internet firestorm. Yesterday afternoon ESPN The Magazine published an article with the title "What if Michael Vick were white?."

No, we are not kidding.

Novelist and music journalist Touré took a look at how race is "an undeniable and complex element of Vick's story, both because of his [playing] style as well as the rarity of black QBs in the NFL."

To punctuate the point, Touré proposes: "But after his arrest for dogfighting, so many people asked: Would a white football player have gotten nearly two years in prison for what Vick did to dogs?"

ESPN's art department went to work bringing Touré's question to life: An illustration of Michael Vick as a white man. They were also quick to yank the image from print.

Exactly what was running through ESPN's mind? Is it possible that ESPN was hoping to attract a ton of eyeballs by being "controversial" and "Edgy?"

Certainly the controversy part has already paid off. Read the whole article here.
