The California Highway Patrol said Tuesday night the bridge was closed in both directions after part of a cantilever section fell on to lanes on the top deck during the afternoon commute.
It was not known if high winds in the region Tuesday played any role in the mishap.
A California Highway Patrol official said the bridge would be closed 24 hours, the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported. Bay Area Rapid Transit officials said longer commuter trains would operate Wednesday and service would start earlier in the morning than usual.
One vehicle was hit by the parts, but no one was hurt, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. A part that looked like a cable was seen draped over a rental truck.
Caltrans officials told the Chronicle two high-strength steel rods and a saddle that fell were part of an emergency repair that was made around Labor Day.
