Elizabeth Smart On Ordeal (VIDEO): Abduction, Terror, Rape, Religion. Elizabeth Smart, at the age of 14, was kidnaped and held against her will six years ago.

Smart says she feels lucky to be alive and says that from the day she came home she hasn't wasted time looking back, reports CMS. She opened up about her past in a cover story in a recent issue of People Magazine.
In the article, she says, "I feel so fortunate that I was able to come through this unscarred ... Certainly there were times when I tried to escape, but he kept telling me that if I did, he'd kill my entire family .... I want to tell other people, 'Don't give up. Miracles do happen,'."
Smart's alleged abductors remain in custody and are currently being evaluated for their mental fitness to stand trial.
Prosecutors say the self-proclaimed prophet abducted the then-14-year-old Smart from her home at knife point in 2002 and held her for nine months, allegedly wanting to make her his plural wife.
Elizabeth Smart's testimony included the hideous details of her captivity in the early days, and how Mitchell manipulated her into doing his bidding.
Smart testified that Mitchell 'raped her three or four times a day and threatened to kill her if she yelled or tried to escape,' says the transcript, according to AP.
Smart described Mitchell as 'Evil, wicked, manipulative, stinky, slimy, greedy, selfish, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God.'
Immediately after Elizabeth Smart's 2002 kidnapping, Mitchell tethered her to a tree, using a 10-foot cable slung between two trees and attached to her leg with a bolt.
"He told me he was a prophet," Smart said under cross-examination by Mitchell's lawyer. "He said he was the voice of God on Earth and that he would reign over God's children until Jesus came."
"He used religion to get what he wanted," she testified. "He had an excuse for everything he did with a religious side to it."
U.S. District Attorney Brett Tolman said Smart's testimony established that Mitchell was primarily interested in getting away with criminal acts, the newspaper said. Defense attorney Robert Steele said some of Smart's testimony supported the suggestion that Mitchell is delusional.
Smart said Mitchell made her use alcohol and drugs and exposed her to pornography.
"Anything I showed resistance or hesitation to, he would turn to me and say, 'The Lord has commanded you to do this, you have to experience the lowest form of humanity to experience the highest,'" she testified.
Smart testified she believes that Mitchell was fully aware of his actions, knew that he could be punished, and understood how the court system worked, reports AP.
Mitchell also gave her the alias of 'Augustine Marshall' and told her what to say to police if they were ever picked up, and bragged to her about previous sexual abule crimes, Smart told the court. "Never in nine months did Mitchell appear confused or out of control," Smart said. "He was a very capable, intelligent human being."
Smart said Mitchell forced her to view pornography with him, and to take drugs and alcohol to make her more pliable when he would attack her, and she even tried to fight Mitchell off by biting him, to no avail.
Smart was forced to wear a white, ankle-length robe, a head scarf and two veils across her face in order to avoid detection.
Mitchell's defense attorneys had objected to allowing Smart to offer her opinions on Mitchell's state of mind, but Kimball determined that since Mitchell has refused to submit to any psychological evaluations, the opinions of a lay person may be relevant, the newspaper said.
Prosecutors say Smart, now 21 and preparing for a mission to Paris for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, can shed light on Mitchell's lack of religious focus as well as his references to himself as a prophet and his manipulation of others, the Tribune said.
She was on the stand for nearly two hours, and her voice never wavered.
Smart was rescued in March 2003 she was seen in a Salt Lake City suburb with Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Eileen Barzee.
The next hearing on Mitchell's competency is scheduled for Nov. 30.
