NFL Lineup Week 8: Previews and Picks
by S. Keough

Brett Favre returns to Green Bay in Week 8 of the NFL, while the Saints, Broncos and Colts test their undefeated records this Sunday.

Vikings at Packers(-3):  Favre finally gets his homecoming after a season and a half of being under center for another team.  He already got on sense of revenge when he beat his old team in Minnesota 30-23.  He led his team to a 6-0 record but the streak ended last week in Pittsburgh.  So rather than trying to protect a perfect season, Favre gets to go in totally focused on the Packers, and he gets to go into Lambeau with the best running back in football.  Green Bay has the better offense, and the better defense on paper but they are allowing too many sacks and not getting enough of them.  They might be able to limit Peterson like they did in game one but if they don't get to Favre, he will pick them apart, again.  The Vikings were a couple of fluke turnovers from beating the Steelers on the road and remaining undefeated, they will get that seventh win, just a week later.  Vikings by 4

Forty-Niners at Colts(-12):  Indianapolis is trying to improve to 7-0 for the fourth time in five years and they have gotten to this point in dominating fashion.  They have won their last four games by an average of 24 points and have now had a week off to get ready for their toughest opponent in over a month.  The Niners, after a quick start, have slipped off their opening momentum and have now decided to change gears, going with Alex Smith at quarterback over Shaun Hill.  Smith scored three touchdowns in the second half of last week's game against Houston and even though the comeback fell short, Smith was given an encore performance.  Too bad he will be up against the best quarterback in the NFL.  Colts by 14

Broncos at Ravens(-3.5):  Denver has been tested the last few weeks and come out unblemished, topping the Patriots and Chargers before getting a week's rest.  Baltimore is their next stop, facing a team that has lost three in a row.  Both these teams have been thriving on stopping the run but the Broncos also been piling up the sacks.  Flacco has only been sacked ten times this season and might become more familiar with the ground but in the end, playing at home, with a team due for a loss, he should be able to pull this one out and get Baltimore back on track.  Ravens by 2

Texans(-4.5) at Bills:  Andre Johnson could be a little slowed by the lung contusion that kept him out til Thursday but even halfway back, he and Matt Schaub should have some success against a defense that allows over 360 yards a game.  Steve Slaton should be able to benefit against Buffalo's last place rushing defense and the defense only needs to worry about stopping the solid duo of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson who are the true weapons in the Bills offense.  Overall, Buffalo can't score points, so they stand no chance of keeping up.  Texans by 10

Browns at Bears(-14):  With back-to-back losses to Atlanta and Cincinnati, the Browns are coming to town just in time.  Cleveland should really be going with Brady Quinn at quarterback but they are making decisions base on money rather than the future which is bad news for Browns fans.  Cedric Benson had a field day against Chicago's defense but no one on Cleveland has anything approaching Benson's talent.  Jay Cutler and Matt Forte need to really shine this week because there are alot of tough games ahead, this just isn't one of them.  Bears by 10

Seahawks at Cowboys(-9):  Miles Austin proved his first game wasn't a fluke and he has become Tony Romo's number one target.  Dallas's win over the Falcons was solid one, maybe the best game the Cowboys have played all season.  Matt Hasselbeck had a horrible game going into the break and will want to play better.  T.J. Houshmandzadeh is frustrated and look for Hasselbeck to start feeding him the ball.  Seattle hasn't been able to put together a running game which is allowing defenses to sit back and force Hasselbeck to beat them, which he hasn't been able to do.  Cowboys by 7

Rams at Lions(-4):  Detroit know exactly how it feels to lose 17 in a row but you won't see them giving St. Louis any sympathy.  Matt Stafford is back after missing a pair of games because of a knee injury and he may even get Calvin Johnson back to help his recovery even more.  Stephen Jackson should have a solid chance at a bounce back game with Detroit's not so good run defense but he's on an offense that just can't seem to find any rhythm.  St. Louis is about to officially trade places with Detroit as the worst team in the NFL.  Lions by 3

Dolphins at Jets(-3.5):  Another rematch from a few weeks ago giving the home team a chance to avenge a loss on the road.  Two of the top rushing attacks in the NFL will go heads up.  The Jets get to bring in momentum after a huge win in Oakland while the Dolphins wasted some big mistakes by Drew Brees and an early lead by a second half debacle.  Chad Henne had two pick-sixes in the game and Ted Ginn Jr. had some big drops.  After some initial success, these two are struggling.  Mark Sanchez has had his own tough weeks too but hopefully the Jets will lean on their running game a little more and give their young quarterback a better gameplan than one that leads him to throw five picks in a game.  Jets by 4

Giants(-1) at Eagles:  New York has lost two in a row after a 5-0 start and now faces their closest division rival on the road.  Osi Umenyiora took down Donovan McNabb six times in a meeting two years ago, something the Giants missed in their two games last year while he sat out the season due to knee surgery.  Even with the win against the Redskins, the Eagles have looked sloppy in consecutive weeks, they can't play that way against the Giants.  Michael Westbrook is recovering from a concussion and probably shouldn't even play, but he will and that isn't good news for the Eagles.  The team that bounces back this week will be the early leader in the NFC East.  Giants by 3

Jaguars at Tennesee(-3):  Tennessee has finally decided to go with Vince Young with the season all but over and the only person who probably cares is Vince Young.   Once thought of as the quarterback of the future, and heir to Steve McNair in Tennessee, Young has lost all of his lustre and is now just getting another shot because the Titans are so bad.  Jacksonville has won three of four games that nobody has really gotten a chance to see because of their home blackouts and they already have one win against this year's Titans.  Young is not only not likely to spark Tennessee, he's likely to make them worse.  Jaguars by 7

Raiders at Chargers(-16.5):  When these two teams met in the opener it looked like the best in the division barely escaped a team that could challenge them for the top spot all year.  Instead, the Raiders returned to their miserable form and the Chargers turned out not to be the class of the AFC West after all.  San Diego looks like they could be back on track, coming off the bye with a dominating win in Kansas City.  Another route could give them what they need to snag a win against some tougher opponents to follow.  Meanwhile, Oakland followed up their surprising win over the Eagles with an absolutely horrible showing against the Jets.  JaMarcus Russell has yet to show any signs that he was worth his number one overall draft status and he can't even admit that any of the Raiders offensive problems are caused by his play.  That's not a good sign that he will turn it around anytime soon.  Chargers by 17

Panthers at Cardinals(-9.5):  Arizona got a big win over the Giants and now get to host an underachieving Carolina team.  While Jake Delhomme is still trying to figure out how to get the ball to his own receivers more often than the other team's cornerbacks and last year's best rushing attack is still stuck in the mud, Kurt Warner has the Cardinals flying high.  Despite having no significant ground game, Arizona is moving the ball at will and their defensive backs are shutting down the receivers of other teams.  That backfield is going to give Delhomme fits this weekend.  Cardinals by 13

Falcons at Saints(-10.5):  Remarkably this will be New Orleans first game against a division opponent his season and they face Atlanta just one win shy of their best start in franchise history.  Last week's win was completely different from their other five wins as they recovered from a 24-3 start to rollover Miami 46-34 and it was the defense that put them over the top with two interception returns for a touchdown.  Atlanta might find something they can exploit in those game films from Miami but it's just not likely that Drew Brees will make the same mistakes that put New Orleans in such a big hole.  The Falcons really need to get Michael Turner going, but even if they do, it won't keep them in this game.  Saints by 10

Last Week's Results:  10-3

Overall Results:  69-34
