Cole Hamels hadn't allowed a hit through three innings until Alex Rodriguez broke through with a two-run homer that just cleared the railing in left. The hit was originally ruled a double, but replay over-ruled the call when it showed the ball hitting a network camera that was above the rail.
More big hits followed in the fifth when Nick Swisher doubled to start the frame and was sent home by a base hit from Andy Pettitte. The Yankees weren't done. Derek Jeter singled and Johnny Damon scored two with his double to right. Hamels finale would be a walk of Mark Teixeira.
J.A. Happ got him out of the inning with no further damage but gave up a deep ball to Nick Swisher that put the Yankees up by three.
Werth tried to get the Phillies back into the game when he started the bottom of the sixth with his second homerun but Pettitte recovered to fan the next two batters and Eric Bruntlett flew out before he made his exit. The left-hander gave up four runs on five hits and struck out seven on the way to his third win of the postseason.
Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui added a couple of runs with an RBI-single and a homerun while the Phillies were held to just a single homer from Carlos Ruiz in the ninth when the Yankees went to Mariano Rivera to get the last two outs.
Philadelphia will try to even the best-of-seven series Sunday night when Joe Blanton faces C.C Sabathia. Blanton has appeared three times in the postseason but has just one start. He allowed four runs on six hits in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game four of the NLCS.
Sabathia has four starts in the 2009 playoffs. He is 3-1 with his only
loss coming in Game one of this series when he fell to Cliff Lee despite
allowing just two runs on four hits in seven innings. The Phillies have
decided to save Lee for Game six.
