Utley's three-run homer in the first inning got to A.J. Burnett early. Utley continued to cause trouble in the third when he drew a lead off walk, stole second and then scored on a base hit by Jayson Werth. Raul Ibanez followed with an RBI-single that chased Burnett with no outs recorded in the frame. The two-plus inning outing was his shortest appearance of the season.
Utley and Ibanez struck again when they each added solo shots in the seventh.
Cliff Lee allowed just two hits and two runs over seven innings but was dinged in the eighth when he surrendered three hits to the first three batters. Chan Ho Park was able to get the next three hitters but not before Lee was charged with three more runs and the Phillies advantage was cut to three.
The Yankees inched a bit closer in the ninth when Derek Jeter bounced into a double play with runner's at the corners and no outs but Ryan Madson held on to collect his first save when he fanned Mark Teixeira.
So the series continues Wednesday with Pedro Martinez taking the mound against Andy Pettitte. Martinez took the loss in Game 2 despite allowing just three runs in six innings thanks to an even better performance from Burnett. Pettitte earned his third win of the postseason his last time out despite allowing four runs in six innings in Game 3.
