Matsui added a run-scoring single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth, accounting for all but one of the Yankees seven runs as they locked up their 27th World Championship.
Andy Pettitte, pitching in his ninth world series game, allowed three runs over five and a third innings, exiting shortly after Ryan Howard inched the Phillies closer with a two-run shot. The win was Pettitte's 18th, an MLB record.
Pedro Martinez, who was just 1-1 in his two World Series appearances prior to Wednesday night, allowed four runs on three hits and was replaced after just four innings. Chad Durbin only made matters worse, allowing three of his four batters to reach, all of which scored.
The other bullpen was nearly perfect, blanking the Phillies for three and a third innings. Mariano Rivera recorded the final five outs, taking over for Joba Chamberlain and Damaso Marte.
With the win, the Yankees ended a 9-year "drought", winning their first Championship since the 2000 season, the last in a three-year run. Pettitte was on all three of those teams, as was Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Rivera.
The loss kept the Phillies from becoming the first National League team to repeat as champs in 33 years. The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series in 1975 and 1976.
This is the second time in Yankees history they have opened a new stadium with a World Series win. The previous Yankees stadium was opened in 1923, the year the Yankees defeated the New York Giants in six games.
With the season ending later than ever, there are just 150 days left til opening day 2010.
