UPDATE: An update from Fort Hood officials in the shootings at the military processing facility reveal that the shooter, a soldier, is not dead as previously reported and the 2 others apprehended have been released, reports FOX News.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan

According to an ABC News report, "Hasan allegedly opened fire and killed 11 people on the base." 

It was widely reported that Hasan was the 'primary' shooter but now there is some question if he was the only shooter. Hasan was said to be carrying two handguns. According to early reports, Hasan was due to be deployed, but had spoken many times about not wanting to go.

Hasan is an officer, a major, who did not want to be deployed and was upset about the war, per FOX News early reports. He also was reported as an Islam convert but he was raised a Muslim. He is also being reported as an Army psychiatrist, reports the Army Times.

The attack happened at the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, according to the FOX 4 television station, and at the Howze Theater.

President Obama spoke of the tragic event, and expressed his horror at the incident, and sorrow for the soldiers and victims as well as their families. He also promised answers regarding the "horrible incident".

The base lockdown mode has been lifted, according to Fort Hood's website.
