Former record-setting swimmer Andrew Coan, 54, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and child neglect in Boca Raton, Fla., police reported.
Police reported Coan was backing out of a parking space at Addison Mizner Elementary School on June 5 with his 8-year-old son on the front seat and an alcoholic beverage inside the car, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
Coan failed a roadside sobriety test and refused to take an Intoxilyzer test to determine his blood alcohol level, officials said. The police report also said Coan smelled strongly of alcohol, his eyes were red and glassy, he slurred his speech, and he was flushed.
Police released the child into his mother's custody.
Coan held the world record for 100-meter freestyle when he was 17. He attended the University of Tennessee and won seven NCAA national championships in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events. (c) UPI
