Ontario, Canada (tPC) - Repeating the increasing global feelings against biofuel production, the Liberal Party seems to be backtracking on its previous stance concerning green energy as Liberal MP Keith Martin called for a moratorium on government subsidy on biofuels.
Martin was quoted by the Globe and Mail with saying, "The realistic thing to do is put a moratorium on it now so people can actually wrap their heads around the facts. The current biofuel strategy is deeply misguided."
Martin's statement stands in stark contrast to a pronouncement by Liberal leader Stephane Dion last year in Regina for the federal government to double its ethanol target to 10 percent from 5 percent blend proposed by a bill in the House of Commons.
Canada has allocated $2.2 billion as support for biofuel production. It was only a year ago that the shift to cleaner forms of energy was widely praised throughout Canada, but the rising cost of food due to corn and sugar being produced for ethanol instead of for use as food triggered the shift in opinion on biofuels.
